Chinook captures District 6C-East crown in Gildford with thrilling five set win

The Chinook Sugarbeeters, Harlem Wildcats and Hays Lodge/Pole Thunderbirds wrapped up the regular season volleyball schedule this past week and now turn their attention to the post-season.

The Sugarbeeters won three matches, beginning with a 3-0 sweep of the Thunderbirds Tuesday night in Hays. Friday Chinook was in Gildford where they won a hard fought five set thriller, 3-2 over the North Star Knights. That win locked up the District 6C-East top seed. Saturday they were at home celebrating senior night with a 3-0 sweep of the Box Elder Bears. The 'Beeters received their Conference Championship plaque following the match.

The Harlem Lady Cats avenged an early season loss to the North Country Mavericks with 3-2 road win on Thursday night. Saturday, the Lady Cats were home and honored their nine seniors before sweeping the Poplar Indians. Harlem will take the District 2B No. 3 seed into the tournament later this week.


The Chinook Sugarbeeters began the week with a 25-17, 25-1, 25-7 win in Hays over the Thunderbirds and concluded the regular season at home Saturday night with a 25-13-25-17-25-12 win over the Box Elder Bears.

Sandwiched in between those two conference wins was a huge match with the North Star Knights in Gildford Friday night. Both teams brought identical 7-1 league records into the match with the winner claiming the regular season conference championship.

Chinook earned a hard fought 3-2 win over North Star at home back in September and knew it would be another tough test.

North Star honored their seniors prior to the start of the contest and used that emotional lift to power their way to a 25-17 win over Chinook in set number one.


The 'Beeters regained control in set number two, evening the match with a 25-21 win. Chinook maintained that momentum in set number three, topping the Knights 25-19 to go up 2-1 in the match.

The 'Beeter attack never got going in set number four and the Knights cruised to a 25-14 win to even the match and force a deciding fifth set for the conference championship.

North Star started set number five in control, taking a 4-1 early lead. 'Beeter head Coach Paula Molyneaux called a timeout and when the girls stepped back on the court they were able to right the ship and earn a tough 15-12 win the defeat the Knights 3-2.

Junior Delaney Kellam powered home 10 Kills in the win while senior Kendra McMaster added 7. Junior Ginger Hauer set the hitters up with 21 Assists. Hauer also dug up 20 balls and served four Aces. Junior Jayden Miller also served four Aces in the win.


Chinook will now take the No. 1 Seed into the District 6C-East Tournament this week. The tournament gets underway Thursday morning in Chinook. The first match of the day begins at 9:00 a.m. The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds will play the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks in match number two and the 'Beeters will open tournament play in match number three against the winner of the first match between Box Elder and Big Sandy.

The top three teams at the District 6C-East Tournament will advance to the Northern C Divisional in Cascade November 7-9.

Back in September the North Country Mavericks from the District 1C came to Harlem and defeated the Lady Cats 3-1. Thursday Harlem turned the tables when they visited North Country.

Harlem took a tightly contested first set 27-25 to gain the early momentum. The Mavericks battled back though and won sets number two and three.

The Lady Cats have been resilient all year and were so again on Thursday. Harlem took set number four 25-23 to even the match and force a deciding fifth set. The Lady Cats maintained the momentum in earning a 15-11 win the take the match 3-2.

Seniors Sarah Billmayer and Aspen Baker led the attack with 10 Kills each. Senior Taeshon Schaeffer tallied 12 Assists and senior Jessica King served up four Aces in the win.

Saturday in the home finale against the Poplar Indians the Lady Cats took care of business quickly. Harlem won set number one 25-16, and doubled up the visitors 25-12 in set number two. The Lady Cats then swept away the visitors with a 25-20 third set win. Billmayer slammed home eight Kills, while Schaeffer recorded 11 Assists.

Harlem by virtue of a tie break will be the No. 3 seed at the District 2B Tournament and will face the No. 2 Wolf Point Wolves on Friday at 11:30 a.m. The Lady Cats are already assured of making their third straight trip to the Northern B Divisional with their No. 3 seed in the five team tournament.
