Chinook junior Delaney Kellam places the ball perfectly for a point in the first semi-final against the North Star Knights Thursday.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters captured another District 6C-East Championship and the Harlem Lady Cats turned in the best showing in school history with a second place finish at the District 2B Tournament in Glasgow.

The Sugarbeeters cruised through the tournament in Chinook, which began on Thursday and concluded Friday. They opened with a 3-0 sweep of the Big Sandy Pioneers and then beat the runner up North Star Knights, both Thursday and Friday, evening to win their second straight championship.

Harlem began play in Glasgow Friday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of the Wolf Point Wolves. Friday night they fell to the Glasgow Scotties 3-0. Saturday was nearly the same with the Lady Cats defeating the Wolves once again 3-0. In the final they again fell to the Scotties, this time by a 3-1 margin.

The Sugarbeeters have had their way for the most part in the District 6C-East over the years. With the exception of a minor hiccup a few weeks ago against the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks, it's been more of the same this year.

The 'Beeters entered the tournament as the top seed and awaited the winner of the Big Sandy vs. Box Elder first round match.

Chinook easily defeated the Pioneers in their first match by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-22. Junior Delaney Kellam powered the attack with 14 Kills.

Thursday night in the first semifinal, the 'Beeters fell to the North Star Knights in set number one 25-20 but rallied to win the next three, 25-21, 25-13, 25-12 to advance to the championship match Friday night. Kellam again led the offensive attack with 13 Kills while junior Ginger Hauer set the hitters up with 26 Assists. Junior Lily Surber dug up 26 balls to keep the play alive and junior Crystal Hofer, along with Hauer each served four Aces.

Friday night in the final against North Star, the 'Beeters found themselves down late in the first set 24-20 but rallied for six straight points to hand the Knights a devastating first set 26-24 loss.

Chinook added a 25-13 second set win to put the Knights on the edge, but North Star fought back to take set number three 25-21.

The 'Beeters were again tested in set number four, but were able to put the final two points on the board to claim their second straight District 6C-East Championship with a 27-25 fourth set win over the Knights to win the match 3-1.

Kellam was at the forefront of the 'Beeter attack with 19 of the teams 42 Kills in the match. Hauer was consistent again, delivering the hitters 36 Assists. Miller led the defense with 26 Digs in the contest. Kellam and freshman Bree Swanson each recorded three blocks and Hauer and surber each served up three aces.

It was the fourth time this season the 'Beeters and Knights have played and Chinook has won all four matches. The 'Beeters will take the District 6C-East No. 1 seed into the Northern C Divisional this weekend in Cascade.

Chinook will open up with a match against the District 7C No. 3 Highwood/Geraldine Rivals at Noon on Thursday.

The Harlem Lady Cats were in Glasgow Friday and Saturday for the District 2B Tournament. The girls had already locked up spot at the Northern B Divisional later this week by virtue of their No. 3 seed. Four of the five teams at the District 2B advance and the Lady Cats were looking to position themselves with a high seed entering divisionals.

The girls did just that, playing in the District Championship Saturday night for the first time in school history.

The Lady Cats played four matches in Glasgow. They began the tournament by defeating the Wolf Point Wolves on Friday in three sets 25-20, 25-13, 25-23 to advance to the first semi-final. Senior Aspen Baker tallied nine kills in the match.

Friday night they were swept by the top seed Glasgow Scotties 25-16, 25-17, 25-18 and would face the Wolves again Saturday afternoon.

Just like the day before Harlem earned a sweep over the Wolves 25-17, 25-22, 25-22 and advanced to their first ever district volleyball championship. Baker again led the attack with 10 Kills, senior Taeshon Schaeffer added 12 Assists and senior Aria Owens served up nine Aces in the win.

The Lady Cats were able to win the third set 25-15 but fell again to the Scotties to finish second in the tournament.

Harlem will open play at the Northern B Divisional in Wolf Point, Thursday as the District 2B No. 2 at 11:45 a.m. against the District 1B No. 3 Fairfield Eagles.

The top two teams at both the Northern B and Northern C Divisionals will advance to the All-Class State Tournament held in Bozeman, November 14-16.
