Moomey records a Hole-In-One on Hole #5! Chinook Men's League Headed to the Playoffs

August 12, 2020

One of the great things for area golfers in the crazy year of 2020 is they have had the opportunity to hit the links and experience a bit of normalcy in this anything but normal summer. Many locals as well as duffers all along the Hi-line from Shelby to Wolf Point have headed to the course for a casual round of golf by themselves, with family or as small groups ready to get the competitive juices flowing. For many it also meant getting their league teams together to compete weekly at their local courses. The League seasons in Harlem, Havre and Malta are winding down and the regular season in Chinook ended with a bang last Wednesday as teams now turn their attention to the playoffs.

The Chinook Golf and Country Club is one of the premier member owned 9 Hole Courses in the area and has developed a solid reputation across the region. Mike Seymour has done a remarkable job bringing the course to new heights and the results are impressive. A number of golfers from Harlem, Malta, Havre, Box Elder and Rocky Boy regularly play the course are have teams in the Chinook Men's League Field. The Chinook Golf Course plays host to the Men's League on Wednesday evenings and the Women's League on Thursday nights.

14 teams make up the 2020 Men's League and concluded their regular season last week. Beginning this weekend, the teams will be split into two as a Championship play will take place with the top seven teams taking part in that. The bottom seven teams will compete in a consolation tournament. The top seed in each bracket will have a first week bye in the tournament.

The final week of the regular season included many battles for position in the tournament but also featured a Hole-In-One. Playing the 5th Hole, Bob Moomey grabbed his TaylorMade Burner Pitching Wedge from 130 yards out on the Par 3. He struck the ball high and straight, landing it within a foot directly right of the pin, one hop and down it went for the Ace. The celebration could be heard across every hole of the course. Moomey was playing his third hole of the round and was subbing for the First Bank Team. Bob's Ace was witnessed by Lane Seymour, Todd DePriest and Gerry Viese.

The final week also decided some tie breakers heading into the playoffs. Despite a tough final week loss to Chinook Pharmacy the Richman Insurance team earned the top seed in the championship bracket by virtue of a win over Finley's Food Farm earlier in the season. Both teams finished at the top of the league standings with 282.5 points. By winning the top seed Richman Insurance will open tournament play with a bye and take on the winner of the 4/5 seed match.

The fourth and fifth seeds also finished tied at the conclusion of the season and will play each other in the first round with Hole 19 taking the four seed having defeated the fifth seed, Beaver Creek/Nalivka earlier. Both these teams finished the regular season with 271 points. Finley's Food Farm will play the No. 7 Seeded Vintage Oil & Gas (248.5) in the first round while the remaining championship match will have the No. 3 Seed Chinook Pharmacy (271.5) taking on the No. 6 Seed Eagles (269.0)

In the Consolation Tournament, Bear Paw Credit Union (8th overall, 241 points) will have the No. 1 seed and a bye the first week. No. 2 Seed North Fork Angus (9th overall, 241 points) will play No. 7 Seed Triple Dog Brewery (14th overall, 199 points). No. 3 Seed New Concept Lawn Care (10th overall, 237.5 points) will challenge No. 6 Seed Chinook Vet Clinic (13th overall, 224.5 points) and No. 4 Seed Mear's Music (11th overall, 236.5 points) will play No. 5 Seed First Bank (12th overall, 234 points).

The league for the most part had a pretty normal season, with a few exceptions here and there. Overall, with all things considered, the more than 100 players to play during the season enjoyed a lot of good times together on the course and are looking forward to an exciting tournament regardless of which one they are a part of.
