Start the new year off with a new book! The library has many new selections ready for check out. New suspense novels include “Little Disasters” by Sarah Vaughan, “Hurry Home” by Roz Nay and “Under Pressure” by Robert Pobi.

Two new biographies are “I Want You to Know We’re Still Here: A Post-Holocaust Memoir” by Esther Safran Foer and “His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, A Life” by Jonathan Alter.

Other new novels include “Betty” by Tiffany McDaniel and “Bear Necessity” by James Gould-Bourn.

Join the 2021 Book Challenge to read a unique category of book each month. The Book Challenge for January is to read a book written by an author who uses some form of initials in their name. We have a selection on display to help with your selection. When you complete the challenge contact the library and your name will be entered to win a gift certificate from a local business.


Book Club members may pick up the new book “The Big Finish” by Brooke Fossey. The first discussion will be January 11, 4 P.M. via Skype. The link may be found on the library website http://www.harlempubliclibrary.org. If you cannot make it to the library to pick up the book we will be happy to deliver it or mail it to you.

There will be no Virtual Story Time Jan. 12. It will resume January 19, 10 A.M. via Facebook Live. Like the Harlem Facebook page so you and your children may watch.

The exclusively online Winter Reading program continues until the end of February. The program encourages readers of all ages to track books read using the READsquared app or website. For each book read a snowflake will be added to the Winter Reading wall. Call the library for more information.

The on-going used book sale continues in the Reading Room. Pick up a hardback title for $.25 or a paperback for $.10.

The library has electronic devices for patrons to check out. Mobile hotspots enable you to connect to the internet anywhere there is a cell signal. We also have two iPads and an HP Pro Tablet available for check out. You must be a registered patron in good standing for at least one month, be at least eighteen years old, and sign a lending agreement to check out these devices.

The Harlem Public Library has launched a new program to help your child get ready for school! 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a book tracking program for babies, toddlers, and preschool age children. Any age reader who reads to your child is encouraged to track their reading and try to reach the goal of 1000 books before Kindergarten. Families can keep track by marking tallies, writing down titles, or using our tracking system ReadSquared. Find it at http://www.harlempubliclibrary.readsquared.com. Children who track their reading can earn prizes along the way. Instill a lifelong love of reading in your child! Contact the library with any questions.
