January 27, 2021

Chinook senior Ethan Bell gives the 'Beeters a 32-12 lead with a deep three late in the first half against Fort Benton Saturday night. Bell finished with 20 points in the contest.

It was a tough week on the hardwood for local schools with Covid-19 having a huge impact. The Harlem Wildcats were able to get their game against Box Elder in on Tuesday but following the contest the decision was made to suspend all Winter Sport activities. The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds made the same decision Tuesday afternoon. Both schools have stated that they will resume practice on February 1 and that all postponed contests will be rescheduled. The Turner Tornadoes had their contest Saturday with North Star postponed as well, but played in Big Sandy Friday night. The Chinook Sugarbeeters took on the North Star nights in Gildford and then hosted the Fort Benton Longhorns Saturday night.

The Harlem Wildcats welcomed the Box Elder Bears to town Tuesday night. The Wildcats were relentless in their offensive attack from the get go. Junior RJ Ramone connected three times from distance while scoring 11 points in the opening frame. Senior Trent Main added eight points early on to power the Wildcats to a 32-10 advantage heading into the second quarter.

As dominant as their offense was, the Wildcats played stellar defense on top of it. Harlem held the visiting Bears to just 24 first half points while scoring 55 of their own. Junior Tyler Cichosz scored nine of Harlem's 23 second quarter points.

Main continued to dominate the paint in the third quarter, scoring 14 points in the stanza. Ramone added eight more and the Wildcats were in cruise control the remainder of the contest. Harlem led 81-30 after three quarters of action en route to a 95-34 win. Ramone paced the offensive attack with 31, Main added 27 and Cichosz scored 16 in an impressive team effort.

The Sugarbeeters resumed conference play in Gildford Friday night against the North Star Knights. Senior Ethan Bell scored eight first quarter points and junior Oskar Pula scored seven to power Chinook to a 21-15 advantage early. Bell and junior Toby Niederegger added six each in a second quarter effort that saw the 'Beeters build their lead to 17, 42-25 by intermission.

Pula buried his third triple of the contest and scored 12 third quarter points to ignite the 'Beeter offense in the third quarter. Senior Benton Elliot scored 11 down the stretch for the 'Beeters as they coasted to a 82-52 win over the Knights. Pula finished with a game high 24 points in the win. Bell added 17, Niederegger finished with 14 and Benton Elliot 11 in the 'Beeter victory.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters and the Fort Benton Longhorns met up Saturday night in Chinook in battle between two District 9C titans. The undefeated Sugarbeeters at 7-0 overall and 6-0 in District 9C play welcomed the 6-1, 5-0 Longhorns to town.

Senior Benton Elliot started the contest by attacking from the left side of the key to draw a foul and then knocked down a pair of free throws to give Chinook a quick 2-0 lead on their first possession. Bell drained a pair of technical Free throws to push the advantage to 10-4 at the 4:08 mark of the first. A big block from Reese Elliot led to a Niederegger layup and after scoring at the rim while drawing a hard foul, Reese Elliot knocked down another one for a 17-4 lead.

Pula kept things rolling for the 'Beeters with an offensive rebound followed at the rim for a 23-9 advantage. Bell then got hot connecting a turnaround jumper to push the lead to 25-12 and moments later scoring off the glass from the left side to extend the 'Beeter advantage to 17. The dynamic senior then drained a deep three for a 32-12 'Beeter lead. Bell then closed out the half with a steal and a layup 35-13. Teams headed to the locker room with Chinook on top 35-15.

Bell got the 'Beeters second half started with defensive rebound that he turned into a short jumper off on the other end for a 37-15 advantage. Reese Elliot threw down a big two handed slam off a great feed by Pula. Pula finished at the rim after forcing a Fort Benton turnover. Reese scored off a rebound tip to push the lead to 43-18 and a timeout from the Longhorns at 4:05 of third quarter.

Niederegger answered a Fort Benton three ball with a triple of his own and Elliot took a beautiful pass from Pula for another monster two handed slam. Bell drained a long three to put the 'Beeters up 51-27 late in the third quarter.

The wheels came off the 'Beeter offense the final nine minutes of the contest. Fort Benton scored the final five points of the third quarter and put up 25 in the fourth while the 'Beeters managed just a pair of field goals the remainder of the contest. The Longhorns final bucket came at the buzzer to give the 'Beeters their first loss of the season 57-55. Bell finished with a game high 20 points, Reese Elliot added 15 for the 'Beeters.

The Turner Tornadoes turned in a valiant effort Friday night in Big Sandy. Junior Trever Kimmel knocked down a pair of triples early on while seniors Austin Welsh and Shane Kimmel combined for nine, but the Tornadoes trailed at the end of one 17-15.

Big Sandy slowly added to their lead, outscoring Turner by six in the second quarter and two in the third to lead the Tornadoes 55-45 entering the fourth quarter of action. Turner was able to cut just a single point from the Pioneer lead falling 70-61. Shane Kimmel and Welsh each tossed in 23 points for the Tornadoes in the contest.
