Blaine County Beacon: The Options Are Endless with Secret Sun Travel

August 4, 2021

There's a new business in town, although its owner is a familiar face. Secret Sun Travel began booking trips in late July under the belief that "travel is the best therapy."

Operated by Independent Travel Agent Keri Hanson, Secret Sun Travel is a full-service Travel Agency specializing in All-Inclusive Resorts with all the amenities. This specialization comes from Hanson's own travel experiences and knowing what to look for and/or avoid. Inspired by her love for travel, Hanson hopes to design vacation experiences for others. "I am very excited to help give others a great experience with planning their next vacation, whether for an extended period or even a weekend get-away."

To this new business venture, Hanson brings her 22 years of business acumen developed while owning and operating the newspaper with her husband, Keith Hanson, as well as her own travel testimonials. "Right now, you might say I have a specialty for travel to Mexico and destinations like Mazatlán, but that doesn't in any way indicate what I can do for my clients. I can book a trip for hog hunting in Texas, fishing in Alaska, taking a cruise to an exotic location, or sitting on a beach in Belize. The options are endless!"

According to Hanson, the process begins with a few basic questions for the client about budget, destination, and number of travelers. She also likes to inquire about interests and what a client is looking for in a vacation.

"Tell me what you like to do and whether you're looking for relaxation, exploration, education, or some combination. Do you want a resort that is ocean front, garden view, swim-up, or something else entirely?"

Once she has that basic information, Hanson will go to work researching. After exploring the multitude of options and determining the best price for her clients, she will present her proposal with two or three options.

About her services, Hanson stated: "I am here to assist you with your vacation planning, to give you expert advice and recommendations for an unforgettable vacation. Working in the travel industry is an exciting new adventure, and I promise to treat your vacation like my own, collaborating with you to understand what is important to you and crafting a truly special adventure packed with value, expertise, and tips that only a travel agent can deliver."

Plus, with her access to travel agent-only packages and specials that are not available to the general public or to an online surfer, she has the scoop on deals. "I have access to hundreds of resources not presented to the public. In fact, there are travel specials running every week, so I am sure to find a package to meet your budget and desires," stated Hanson.

This saavy gal also explained other reasons to use a travel agent. "Not only do I invest the time to explore all the options, I can offer personal contact, issue resolution, and also assist with any obstacles that might arise while you're travelling-God forbid."

Because this is a new business for Hanson, she has been taking a twelve-week online course through Careers on Vacation. Although an independent contractor, she will work under a host travel agency for six-twelve months until she finds her comfort zone and has built a knowledge base. "A host company provides resources for new agents, like a website and Customer Relations Management software," she reported.

Although Hanson intends to eventually get out on her own, she claims to enjoy the current challenge of acquiring knowledge. "I'm learning so much, and I value that because I want to be sure I am doing due justice to my clients. More knowledge will come with experience, but right now I'm discovering all of the resources that are available."

When asked what motivated her to start a new business, Hanson responded: "Keith encouraged me, but I started this venture because it's something I have wanted to do for a long time. I value his opinion because he comes up with some really great ideas that I don't think of (like hog hunting). I am truly blessed and excited to be able to make my dream come true. We have been married for almost 34 years and in business together for 22. I think we make a pretty good team. This is also a business that is adaptable. When Keith and I decide to sell the newspaper someday, I can take this business with me. In fact, I can be on vacation while I book a vacation for someone else!"

As the biggest reward in owning her own business, Hanson named the personal gratification. "I like helping others, and I'm conscientious about the little things that it takes to provide that assistance."

She also shared a message about relying on mentors. "I have mentors in my classes who share tips but also friends who share advice and talent."

From that arena, Hanson wishes to give a shout out to Makhayla Farmer for helping her get a start on her logo design and to Jessica McIntosh Clontz for putting the final product together.

What began as a mostly golden emblem with sunflowers and a generally sunny appearance turned into something with a blue sky and almost imperceptible sun rays. "It turned out amazing! Jessica is a great family friend and talented in the graphic arts department. She used to design wraps for cars that race on the NASCAR circuit, so I feel fortunate that she shared her talent with me," exclaimed Hanson.

Likewise, Hanson expressed satisfaction at the positive response that she received when people learned about her new venture. "People have been so receptive and supportive, giving my business an opportunity to serve them."

Anyone interested in booking a trip can visit Hanson's website: secretsuntravel.com, call 945-8281, or email kerihanson@secretsuntravel.com. Secret Sun Travel also has a Facebook presence and a group page: Happy Days Await. Those wishing to join that group will encounter travel tips, tricks, and bonus offers, as well as some contests.

When she's not working, Hanson enjoys spending time with her three grandchildren and camping with family. Someday, she hopes to take her grandchildren to Disneyland, sharing her passion for travel with them.
