GARDENING A HUGE SUCCESS

Linda Hauge, of Turner, is seen standing beside one of the sunflowers that she grew in her garden. It towers well over her and adds shade to plants underneath it. It sure adds beauty to the garden as well.

This year was a bit of a challenge for gardening on the Big Flat due to the shortage of rain showers. But, persistence wins the whoppers award for a few gardeners in the area.

Lucy and Cooper Grabofsky hold two of the watermelons that were grown in their grandma, Loretta Beck's garden. Loretta always has a beautiful garden. This year she harvested these watermelons which weighed 14.2 and 16.2 pounds. The grandchildren enjoyed helping Grandma and Grandpa Beck throughout the gardening season.

Loretta Beck of Hogeland is known for growing a great garden each year. This year didn't disappoint. She credits much help from her family including the two grandchildren shown in the photo. One weighed in at 16.2 pounds while the other one was 14.2 pounds. That's super impressive, especially from the Big Flat where the growing season is considerably shorter. Frost usually hits this area earlier and puts an end to gardens that might not be mature yet.

Linda Hauge of Turner also had a wonderful garden. Besides the normal vegetables that she normally grows, she also had sunflowers. She is standing beside one of the plants that towers well over her head. Sunflowers are always a nice addition to a garden adding splendid beauty in the fall.

Great job to both the gals on their harvest. Gardens are a great way to add much pleasure and beauty to a yard besides putting in a great deal of work involved. Having a bountiful harvest is a pay off to that hard work.
