The Chinook Sugarbeeters were looking to get the District 9C season off to a quick start this weekend as they were in Big Sandy Friday night for their conference opener. Saturday the girls were back on the road to take on the Bears in Box Elder.

Chinook began the season with some good non conference action in Shelby at the Coyote Preseason Tip off tournament. The' Beeters looked to build on that early season experience when they opened the conference schedule.

Senior Allison Powell got the offense started Friday night in Big Sandy converting an early and one for a 'Beeter 3-0 lead. Turnovers plagued the 'Beeters early and accounted for the bulk of the Pioneers early scoring run that produced a 9-5 lead with 3:12 left in the opening quarter.

Sophomore Hallie Neibauer made a nice move in the paint, drawing the foul. Neibauer converted one of two from the line to end the Pioneers run and cut the lead to 9-6 late in the first quarter. Neibauer attacked the defense, beating three defenders to the basket for a bucket and 16-11 advantage. Freshman Alexus Seymour the added a free throw on the following possession adding to the 'Beeter momentum.

Junior Torin Cecrle drove to the basket, kicked out a pass to Seymour who drilled a three-point bomb late to give the Sugarbeeters a 25-16 halftime lead.

Chinook kept up their intensity in the second half, steadily adding to their lead, securing a 52 -36 conference win. Neibauer led all scorers with 27. Seymour finished with 10 on the win for the 'Beeters.

The Bears raced out to a 8-1 lead early, but an offensive rebound for a bucket by Neibauer and a three point bucket from Seymour, the Sugarbeeters closed the gap to 8-6 midway through the opening stanza.

A determined Neibauer attacked the basket drawing a foul on the floor. The sophomore connected on both ends of the one and one to bring Chinook within two, 14-12 with 6:45 left in the half. The 'Beeters called a timeout with 5:15 left. Coming out of the timeout Seymour drew a foul and converted both attempts from the free throw line to give Chinook their first lead 16-15 with 5:00 remaining in the half. Neibauer added another bucket and converted the and one to push the lead to four, 19-15 for the Sugarbeeters.

Seymour scored her first two point field goal of the game and eleventh point of the half to extend the 'Beeter advantage to 23-16. The Bears caught fire the final 60 seconds, scoring five straight to cut the lead to two, 23-21. Box Elder closed out the half with a free throw to send the teams to the locker room with Chinook holding a 26-23 halftime lead.

The Bears evened the score, 26-26 right out of the gate to start the second half with a long triple. After the teams traded a bevy of turnovers, Seymour put the 'Beeters up 28-26. Seymour connected again from the charity stripe to extend the lead to 29-26.

The 'Bears went on a bit of run to retake the lead 32-29 midway through the third quarter. Powell would add a free throw and a bucket the remainder off the frame but the Bears continued to score taking 41-32 lead into the fourth quarter. The Bears managed to hold on down the stretch to earn a hard fought 58-47 win. Neibauer paved the way with 24 points in the contest while Seymour finished with 14.

Chinook hosted the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds this Tuesday and results will be in next weeks edition of the Blaine County Journal.

The 'Beeters will make their return to the court in the new year when they travel to Harlem on January 7 to take on the Wildcats. The 'Beeters will host the Turner Tornadoes the following night.
