The Chinook Sugarbeeter and Harlem Wildcat/Lady Cat wrestling teams have gotten off to a good start this season and concluded the 2021 portion of their schedule this weekend in Great Falls. Both Harlem and Chinook were in Fort Benton on Thursday for the Longhorn Mixer.

Friday and Saturday Chinook and Harlem had wrestlers competing in the Annual CMR Holiday Classic. Saturday those wrestlers that didn't advance to the round of 16 at the Holiday Classic took part in the Walt and Trudy Curry JV Tournament at Great Falls High School.

The Sugarbeeters did really well both days and had three podium finishers at the Holiday Classic. Senior Wyatt Dunbar and junior Tyler Schoen each finished fourth on the boys side while freshman Grace Buck placed sixth in the girls tournament.

The Holiday Classic is the premier regular season tournament in the state with the best wrestlers from all four classes competing against each other on the same mat. To place at the Holiday Classic is a true accomplishment.

Dunbar has wrestled very well at the heavyweight division this year and this weekend was no different. He picked up wins by pinning Carson Lotan (Fergus), Jacob Berger (Poplar) as well as a decision over Shawn Tadlock (CMR), and Leo Scafani (Whitehall) en route to a fourth place finish.

Schoen has been equally impressive to start the season and earned a fourth place finish at 170 pounds that included pins of Bridger Stoll (CMR) Tristan Fisher (Ronan) and decisions over Camden Johnson (Laurel) and Royce Conklin (Glacier).

Buck has experienced success in her first year of high school wrestling and on the big stage at the Holiday Classic she finished sixth at 103 pounds. Buck pinned Thompson Falls Desani Bewick in 0:25 along the way.

Harlem's Izzy Baker and Kaitlyn Johnson both fell just short of the podium but picked up some wins along the way. Johnson went 3-2 in five matches at 132 pounds while Izzy Baker went 2-2 at 113 pounds

Wrestling Saturday at Great Falls High for Chinook were senior Drake Berreth, senior Lincoln Reich, sophomore Lane Snider freshman Listat Pope, and freshman Gauge Chapman. Wrestling for the Wildcats were senior Landen Grey, senior Stanley Spangelo, and freshman Trent King, Hawken Haakanson and Joe Arensmeyer.

Chinooks Drake Berreth had a rough draw Friday at the Holiday Classic facing the top two wrestlers in the tournament. Saturday he was back on the mat and Head Coach Ben Stroh was thrilled with how he performed, "Drake's been wrestling great. Better than I've ever seen him wrestle. He just had a tough draw Friday, but wrestled really well on Saturday for us."

Berreth earned a Major Decision win over Jack Hayder (Three Fork) as well as pin of Jaiden Conners (Andaconda). In the Consolation final Berreth picked up a 6-4 decision over Bozeman's Jake Adams to finish third at 152.

Snider had a great Saturday as well at Great Falls High finishing third at 145 pounds. Snider earned wins over Austen Haugen (Fort Benton/Big Sandy), Grady Richardson (Circle) and Brady Whitman (Missoula Sentinel) by pin as well as a 9-3 decision over Shaun Billingsly (Missoula Big Sky/Loyola).

Reich finished Saturday fourth at 160 pounds. Reich won by fall over Zach Chinn (Fergus) twice and Louis James (Ronan).

The Sugarbeeters and Wildcats will return to the mat on January 6 at the Chester/J-I Mixer. They will both be in Cut Bank, January 7-8
