Turner takes down Dodson; Lose to Box Elder

December 29, 2021

The Turner Tornadoes closed out the 2021 portion of their high school boys basketball schedule this past week. On Monday, December 20 the Tornadoes defeated the visiting Dodson Coyotes 54-49. The following night in Box Elder the Tornadoes couldn’t keep up with the Bears in a 86-29 setback.

Sophomore Ryan Doyle led the Tornado offense right out of the gate, scoring eight first quarter points against the Coyotes. Sophomore Trent Billmayer buried a triple and added five more to the Tornado attack giving the home team a 18-7 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Coyotes however regrouped and played much better in the second quarter. Doyle kept the Turner offense on track with a three ball and five points in the frame and senior Trevor Kimmel contributed five as well. The Tornadoes however saw their lead trimmed to just three points, 29-26 at the break.

Freshman Carson Maloney connected on three field goals in the third quarter and scored six of Turners ten points. The Coyotes were still functioning on offense and took a 42-39 lead over the Tornadoes into the fourth quarter of action.

Turner rallied on the defensive side of the court and began limiting the good looks the Coyotes were getting in the previous two quarters. The stingy Tornado defense stymied the Coyote attack, limiting the visitors to just seven points down the stretch.

The Turner offense bounced back to its earlier form in the fourth quarter. Kimmel connected from beyond the arc and scored seven in the frame. Doyle added four more to his total including a pair of clutch free throws. In the end Turner outscored Dodson in the fourth quarter 15-7 to pick up a 54-49 non-conference win.

Doyle finished the game with a team high 18 points in the win. Kimmel turned in a solid effort as well scoring 17. Maloney finished with eight and Billmayer seven for the Tornadoes.

Tuesday in Box Elder the Bears out gunned the Tornadoes from the open tip, sprinting to a 86-29 win over the Tornadoes. Doyle led the team with eight points.
