Sugarbeeters Building Momentum on the Mat, Honor Seniors at Final Home Mixer

January 26, 2022

Chinook senior Drake Berreth sets his opponent up for the pin Friday night. Berreth made his final appearance in front of the hometown crowd.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters were at home this past Friday, wrestling in front of the hometown fans for the final time this season. The Chinook Mixer was a bit smaller than normal with Covid-19 limiting the number of teams on hand.

The Harlem Wildcat and Lady Cat teams were unable to attend and canceled their home invitational on Saturday as a result.

The mixer still provided a good opportunity for the wrestlers on hand to get on the mat and compete. In some cases weights were combined and girls wrestled boys, but mat time was available as best it could be provided.

The Sugarbeeters recognized the efforts of their four seniors following the conclusion of the first round of wrestling. The four seniors recognized were: Lincoln Reich, Shay Hauer, Drake Berreth and Wyatt Dunbar.

As the season winds down, the Sugarbeeter and Wildcat wrestling teams are working hard to finish the season strong. Currently Chinook junior Tyler Schoen is ranked No. 3 in the 170 pound division in the Class B/C Power Poll. 'Beeter senior Wyatt Dunbar is also ranked in the latest poll coming in at No. 3 in the 285 pound division.

Chinook is coming together as a team and individually they are working hard. The team performed very well in Choteau recently and Head Coach Ben Stroh reflected on the Invitational, "Things went fairly well in Choteau, like usual we could have done better. As a team we lost a few matches that I thought were winnable. Those are the matches at this point in the season we need to start picking up. However, it was nice to see Tyler (Schoen) come home with the championship trophy."

The team continues to put in the work in the wrestling room during the week, "The team is learning fast and are coming along nicely. I do wish we had a few more weeks to prepare for the end of the year, that is coming fast. However, at this point we are focusing more on the mental part of the sport than just the technical side," commented Stroh.

Fundamentals are still a focal point and Stroh had this to say, "We are getting closer every week. I will not say we are where we want to be or else nobody on my team would lose another match for the rest of the year. There are always things to learn and learn better. That being said, we are working on the little details that will make the differences in tough matches at the end of the year."

This team is very coachable and Stroh appreciates that, "As a collective group they are tough and willing to work and work hard without complaint. However, I do see some tentativeness when we walk on the mat to compete. I do not know if that is a lack of confidence or the pressure they feel. Either way we have had extensive conversations about it. They will always have those feelings but we are working on them being able to control those emotions and channel them into their wrestling."

Chinook sophomore Ryley Hofeldt works her opponent Friday night at the Chinook Mixer. This was the final appearance of the season in front of the hometown crowd.

The 'Beeter girls are a big part of the wrestling room, "The girls have been doing well, they are definitely a staple on our team now. It is hard to believe we wrestled so many years without a girls program. Our girls have been competing well against some really good competition. They will be ready for the state tournament," concluded Stroh.
