The Turner High School held an Induction of the National Honor Society recently in the school gymnasium. One member was inducted into the T.H.S. Chapter, Hannah Richman.

The ceremony paid tribute to service, leadership, character, and above all, to scholarship-these traits which create reasoning and responsible adults and a healthy and just society. Members of the society, Laci Maloney, Dakota Krass, Lacey Hickel, along with their adviser, Mrs. Shelly Harmon reviewed the four requirements upon which election to the society is based. Those requirements are:

SCHOLARSHIP: Scholarship means a commitment to learning, A student is willing to spend hours in reading and study, knowing the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind. n We should continue to learn even when formal education has ended, for education ends only with the end of life. Knowledge is one great element in life, which leads to the highest success, and it can be acquired in only one way-through diligence and effort, Learning furnishes the lamp by which it illuminates the future. Candidates have the charge to continually expand their world through the opportunities inherent in scholarship.

SERVICE: Service can be described in various ways. In the routine of the day's work, many opportunities arise to help others. Willingness to work for the benefits of those in need, without monetary compensation or without recognition, is the quality we seek in our membership. We are committed to the idea of volunteering our time and abilities to the creation of a better tomorrow.

LEADERSHIP: Leadership should exert a positive influence on the school. In taking the initiative in class and school activities, the real leader strives to train and aid others to attain the same objective. The price of leadership is sacrifice-the willingness to yield one's personal interests for the interest of others. A leader has self-confidence and will go forward when others hesitate. No matter what power and resources may exist in a country, they are ineffectual without the guidance of a wise leader. Leadership is always needed; thus, to lead is a very important charge to each of our members.

CHARACTER: Character is the force within each individual which distinguishes that person from others. It gives each one individuality. It is that without which no one can respect oneself, or hope to attain the respect of others. It is this force of character, which guides one through life and, once developed, grows steadily. Character is achieved and not received. It is the product of constant action, daily striving to make the right choice. The problem of self-control. We must be in reality what we wish to appear to others. By demonstrating such qualities as respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship, we may hope to prove by example that we value character.

After the 4 qualities of the society were explained, the symbol or emblem was described. The emblem of the Honor Society is the keystone and the flaming torch. The keystone bears in its corners the letters C.S.L.S, which stand for the four principles of the organization. These values must be fitted faithfully into the purpose of life as the keystone is fitted into the shape to support the arch. The flaming torch is the emblem of our purpose, to carry onward the searching flame of truth, to lead that others may follow the bright light to cherish the enduring verities of life and to serve all the purposes symbolized by the torch.

After the ideals of the Honor Society were explained, Hannah was asked to come forward and light her candle. She was asked to repeat the pledge with the president.

Welcome to the National Honor Society, Hannah Richman. While none of us has yet attained all the ideals set before us, let us together strive to exemplify as much as is humanly possible to esteem and revere Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service to give ourselves generously and to walk in paths of wisdom.
