After maneuvering through an obstacle course and hitching a trailer, Wylee Simenson is being judged on accuracy and safety as he backs a trailer into a designated slot.

Montana FFA CDE Days were held on March 21-22 at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds in Miles City. Chinook FFA Chapter Advisor, Karyn Billmayer reported on the performance of her teams.

Being held in Miles City for the first time, CDE Days played host to 68 FFA Chapters whose members engaged with 13 different competitions over the course of the two-day event. The event contests were state qualifying, and the winners will be honored at the 92nd Annual Montana FFA State Convention this week.

Billmayer explained that CDE Days are Career and Leadership Development Events that provide FFA members with competitive hands-on learning opportunities in various career areas. "It went really well. Chinook had a horse team, two meat science, a vet science, and three individuals who participated in tractor operations."

The top performing team from Chinook was the Horse Evaluation team comprised of Shyla Benzing, Madi Gruszie, Aislinn Handy, and Neva Lowe. They placed 15th in a field of 45 teams. On the individual side of competition, Benzing was hands down the top scorer, achieving 15th place in a field of 159!

Capturing 16th place among the 27 teams competing, Eyan Hofeldt, Wylee Simenson, and Jacob Metcalf represented Chinook in Tractor Operations. The top individual was Metcalf, who earned a position at number 41 out of 68.

In Meat Science, Sterling Bemis, Wylee Simenson, Jacob Metcalf and Britt Powell took part on one team, while Kenneth Gruszie, Kirbey Hofeldt, and Eyan Hofeldt performed on a second. The Meat Science group ranked 18th in a pool of 35 teams. The top individual performer was Kirbey Hofeldt who placed 100th among 146 competitors.

Finally, Veterinary Science competitors were Aislinn Handy, Neva Lowe, Kirbey Hofeldt, and Madi Gruszie. They earned a place at number 30 out of 49. The top ranking individual for Chinook was Handy, who achieved 55/173.

About her competitors, Billmayer said, "It was a great contest and a great way to spend National Ag Day."

When they weren't engaged with CDE competitions, members tested their climbing skills on a rock climbing structure set-up by the National Guard. FFA members also attended a dance on Monday night.

Organizers of the event described it as "a huge success," made possible by several sponsors, advisors, and volunteers who assisted in organizing and helping judge the contests.
