summer internships available

March 30, 2022

Montana Actors’ Theatre (MAT) in Havre, Montana, is again offering several paid internships for college-age students and recent college graduates. Applications are due by April 10, 2022.

According to MAT’s Youth Activities Director, Angela Pratt, intern applicants must be available from early June to mid-August. Although priority will be given to students attending a Montana high school, college, or university or previous Montana high school students, students from any college are invited to apply for this intensive internship.

Since 2015, through their Young Professionals Program, MAT has hired summer interns to oversee MAT’s youth programs, including the touring KidsMAT Summer Children’s Theatre camps and the annual Youth Production.

Interns engaged in the Young Professionals Program gain practical experience in the performing arts. This hands-on professional development includes involvement with directing, stage management, costuming, set design and construction, lighting and sound, and working with children. Interns are guided through the process by MAT staff and volunteers to ensure a quality experience for them and the youth involved.

The KidsMAT Summer Children’s Theatre camps that interns will oversee are designed for youth ages 5-15. Camps typically occur Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Offered in Havre and the surrounding area—which includes such communities as Rocky Boy, Box Elder, Chinook, Fort Belknap, and Shelby—these camps run nearly every week between mid-June and mid-August. This schedule requires travel, sometimes daily, to the outlying camps as well as the ability to provide structured activities for the campers that culminate in a short scripted production at the camp’s conclusion. Therefore, experience working with children and youth is a plus.

Interns will also produce the summer Youth Production, a full-length show with roles for middle and high school aged youth. This summer’s production will be Happily Ever Before. Duties for production (i.e. acting director, technical director, stage manager, costuming) will be divided among the interns.

Applications are available online at mtactors.com. Applicants will be asked to provide a résumé as well as a description of any performing arts experience. Although applicants may be able to hold other employment during the summer season, they are required to include any scheduled or anticipated conflicts on the application.

Anyone seeking additional information is asked to contact Angela at angela@mtactors.com.
