Gift Card Winners from Chinook Prom Announced

April 13, 2022

After an evening in an Enchanted Forest on March 26, gift card winners were reported from Chinook’s prom. On Monday morning, March 28, Prevention Specialist for Blaine County, Ashley Birdtail expressed pleasure in being able to share the success of her prom messaging cards initiative.

Following the Grand March in Floyd Bowen Gymnasium at approximately 8:00 on Saturday night, two cousins were crowned Prom King and Prom Queen: Daniel MacLeod and Anna Terry. Mother of the queen and aunt to the king, Julie Terry stated: “It’s pretty special for them to share that honor.”

Terry also served as one of the prom chaperones and as co-advisor for the event.

At approximately, 10:30 p.m. and just before ‘last dance’ was called, gift card winners were selected. To encourage teens to make healthy choices, Birdtail collaborated with the Blaine County DUI Task Force to promote an alcohol-free, memorable prom experience. Using funds from her Partnership for Success grant, Birdtail purchased single-use breathalyzers, and the Blaine County DUI Task Force provided $50 Visa gift cards as prizes to incentivize teens to participate in taking a voluntary breathalyzer. Debbie Gomke of the DUI Task Force conducted the breathalyzers.

After receiving breathalyzer results from Chinook on Monday morning, Birdtail said, “I’m happy to report that out of 98 students that attended prom, 66 students voluntarily participated and they all passed!”

The winners of the $50 Visa gift cards were Nic Johnson, Quentin Edwards,

Alexis Nelson, and Teagan Richman. About these winners, Birdtail said: “I am very proud of all of our area youth! We are happy to bring awareness to this important issue and to also let the youth know they are cared about. Go, Beeters!”

To further support the healthy choices concept, a team of parents of junior class members held an after-prom party. Hosted in collaboration with the Chinook Eagles Club from 11:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m., the parent group fed about 60 students, who bowled, played darts, or shot pool. “Some kids just came and went, but it seemed like a success,” a team member reported.

When asked about statistics from other schools in the area, Birdtail responded: “Turner’s prom is scheduled for the end of April per their website calendar, and I haven’t received the date for the Hays/Lodge Pole prom. However, I will be reaching out to both schools with the proposal very soon.”
