We've Got The County Covered
On Thursday evening, April 21, Lloyd Sweet Auditorium served as the venue for an induction ceremony of Chinook High School's Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). During the ceremony, nine students pledged to uphold the principles of the honorary organization.
In order to qualify for membership, sophomores Mya Berreth, Quentin Edwards, Aislinn Handy, Aubree Handy, and Hallie Neibauer; along with juniors Aspyn Colby, Lane Hasler, Christopher Jungers, and Daniel MacLeod had to distinguish themselves in four areas.
Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character stand as the pillars of the NHS. In the area of scholarship, the Chinook Chapter of the NHS has established that a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher must be maintained in order to be invited to apply for membership.
Service involves voluntary contributions made by a student to his/her school or community. These are actions performed without compensation. Leadership experiences can come from a myriad of school or community activities. Finally, national guidelines define the student of good character as cooperative; demonstrating high standards of honesty and reliability; showing courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintaining a virtuous disciplinary record.
To celebrate these achievements, the Chapter's Advisor Jill Paulsen welcomed those gathered for Thursday night's ceremony. Secretary Anna Morrow led the Induction, which began with the current officers speaking about the four highlighted qualities of NHS. Liam Edwards, President; Allison Powell, Vice President; and Anna Terry, Historian all joined Morrow in presenting the meaning of the tenets.
Following the pillar presentation, Torin Cecrle conducted a lighting of the candles during which the new inductees recited their pledge to uphold the high purpose of the NHS, to be true to the principles for which it stands, to be loyal to their school, and to maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
As a new advisor, Paulsen said she is looking forward to working with this group of students who have distinguished themselves by exhibiting these high standards.
