The Chinook Sugarbeeter girls basketball team shined this past weekend in Glendive at the Dawson Community College Summer High School Basketball Tournament. The tournament consist of an eight team upper division and a 16 team lower division. Both a boys and girls tournament is ran simultaneously with games being played at the college, the high school and the middle school.

The Sugarbeeters were a part of the 16 team lower division and won the tournament for the second year in a row. Chinook would have competed in the upper division, but were missing three players. Making the trip to Glendive were Torin Cecrle, Mya Berreth, Hallie Neibauer, Jenna Liddle, Alexus Seymour, Hannah Schoen, Jeni Mord and Gracie Skoyen.

The Beeters were impressive right out of the gates, defeating Bainville 41-18 in their tournament opener. Chinook followed with wins over Scobey 16-9, Wibaux 29-22, Wolf Point 43-41 and Savage 38-34. Sunday afternoon they topped a traveling team consisting of players from Ekalaka, Bowmen North Dakota and Buffalo South Dakota, 41-20 to advance to the championship contest against Circle.

The Circle Wildcats are coached by 2013 Chinook High School graduate Mikenda Seymour. The 'Beeters were coached in Glendive by 'Assistant Coach Mike Seymour making the championship a family affair with Alexus playing for the 'Beeters as well. In the end Chinook won the game 39-25 to claim the title.

Head Coach Mike Jones was in Great Falls coaching in the 75 Annual /East/West Shrine game, but is plenty proud of his teams effort, "The girls opened up their first tournament well playing in the championship against Circle. We have a lot of tournaments or scrimmages scheduled for this summer. The best way to get better is by playing and we are going to be playing a lot this summer," said Jones. "We have quite a bit of games scheduled. By playing a lot the girls get a feel for playing with each other and they also get a basketball in their hand, which is two great things when it comes to summer basketball."

This weekend the 'Beeters will be in Malta Friday and Saturday. Monday the girls will head to Havre for a game and then Whitewater on Wednesday as they continue to get as much court time as possible.
