Pageantry, Dance, Song Highlight Hays Powwow '22

The Hays Powwow is always well attended and with beautiful pageantry full of eye-popping colors, wonderful dance and amazing singers and drums highlight the festivities and everyone in attendance always has a good time. The Powwow took place August 11-14 at the Hays Powwow grounds. Don Racine III served as Master of Ceremonies and the Arena Director was Sid Goes Ahead.

The youth Powwow took place the evening of Thursday, August 11 at 6 p.m. and was followed by the Life Language Lodge School Promotion. The opening Grand Entry took place Friday evening at 6 p.m. Friday specials included the Cowboy Hat & Boot Dance in memory of Thane Helgeson. Whipman Truth Brockie Men's Traditional as well as an Honor Song for Irene Talks Different and the Junior Boys Traditional.

Saturday, August 13 featured the Hays Powwow Parade which got started at 10 a.m. and included a Rez Car Contest, Travors Contest and Bike and Horseback riders. Saturday Specials included the Penny Chandler Cancer Survivor Men's Traditional, the Men's Traditional Dance in memory of Henry 'Prince' Brockie and the Men's Fancy Dance in memory of Ruby Brockie. The final special was a Men's Fancy Dance in memory of Preston Grant. Sunday, August 14 included the final Grand Entry at 1 p.m. Specials included the Honoring of First Responders and Veterans, the Mother's Special and the Cancer Survivor James Ruznick Hat and Boot Dance Special.


There were several contests held throughout the Powwow including the ever-popular Drum Contest. Other contests included the 50+ Golden Age Men & Woman, Tiny Tots. Adult Men's and Woman's Traditional, Grass, Fancy and Chicken dances (18-49). Teen Boy's and Girl's Traditional, Grass, Fancy and Chicken dances (13-17) and Junior Boys and Girl's Traditional, Grass, Fancy and Chicken dances (7-12).


The Powwow season in Blaine County is now over but there are Powwows still on the books throughout the state and committees have already been formed and work is underway to make the 2023 Powwow season the very best it can be. Organizers of the many Powwows invite everyone to attend, to come see the spectacular display of culture and tradition and stress the all-inclusive aspect at each event. If you have never been to a powwow, take the time, save the date and be prepared to have a memorable experience that will stay with you long after you return home.
