Sweet Home Out & About: Residents Attend CHS Homecoming Parade, BBQ at Park

October 19, 2022

The Sweet Home staff, along with all of its residents have sure enjoyed the final weeks of summer as well as the start of fall. The mornings are a bit cooler now, but the afternoons are still plenty warm and more than comfortable enough for the residents to get out and enjoy events in the community.

The month of September began with the Chinook High School Homecoming Parade, and the Sweet Home was thrilled to be in attendance. A small group of residents were more than happy to board the bus and venture uptown to take in the local festivities. Many of the residents are themselves graduates of Chinook High School and while others may not have been, who would pass up a good parade. While waiting for the parade to start, a couple of the residents were visited by their grandchildren. Bill Goodman got to see both his great-grandson, Corey and his great-granddaughter, Rachel while Joanne Willman was happy to see her granddaughter, Hallie Neibauer. The weather was nice and everyone had a good time watching the floats go by, some were even lucky enough to catch some candy handed out by the high school students walking alongside the floats.

Another favorite activity for the residents is the Country Drive, an opportunity to get out and see parts of the county that have significant meaning to them or maybe that they haven't been able to see in some time. These excursions and the opportunity to get away from the Sweet Home sure brighten each of the residents day.

In addition, a group of residents once again got to attend a barbecue held at the Girl Scout house at the Sweet Memorial park. Mark and Betty Billmayer, along with the Kitchen Band and members of the congregation from the Chinook Alliance Church hosted a get together that included an invitation extended to family and friends of each of the residents. While a bit smaller than the gathering in August, roughly 58 people were in attendance on September 18. The afternoon was just as joyous and even included homemade pies made by Betty and Kay Johnson. The burgers and pies not served at the girls scout house were brought back to the Sweet Home for more residents and staff to enjoy.

The Sweet Home also received a bit of a facelift this past month on the outside of the building. Sweet Home Administrator Rebecca Shackleford stated, "The work was done by Claussen and Sons, the soffit and facia were redone and wrapped with metal to repair and improve the outside of the building. Seamless rain gutters will be installed in the next few weeks as well." Shackleford went on to say, "I want to make sure the building is in good condition and continues to look like what it is, a beautiful home for our family members. We take a lot of pride in how our building looks on the inside and outside and want to make sure it is well taken care of so that it can endure for many years to come." In addition, the Sweet Home has a new sign to welcome family and guests to the facility. The sign was graciously put in place by Terry Townsend and Denny Overcast.

Each month always concludes with the Resident Birthday Party, a gathering in the Activity Room that celebrates all the residents that celebrated birthdays during the month. Often times a local group of some sort, a church, a club, or community members host the event, serving cake and ice cream to all. The Kitchen Band is a staple at the birthday celebration and a good time is had by all. This month, just one resident, Keith Doney celebrated a birthday.
