MAT Offers Youth Workshops

November 9, 2022

Montana Actors’ Theatre (MAT) is offering workshops for youth ages 12-19 in both November and December. Although the workshops will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30—5:00 p.m. at the Havre High Theatre, youth need not be a Havre Public School student to participate.

The topic scheduled for November is Movement, Voice, and Stage Presence. Workshop dates are November 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 21 and 22. Participants will learn that in the art of performance, the instrument is the actor’s or actress’ body. Interested individuals are invited to join the MAT team as they discuss the nuts and bolts of this craft. Workshop sessions will explore movement, voice, and expression. Honing the body as an instrument will allow for more powerful and deliberate stage presence. According to workshop organizers, developing skills in theatre reaches far beyond the stage. Basic acting session promotes self-confidence, creative problem solving, and enhanced collaboration skills. All experience levels are welcome.

In December, the topics are Acting Technique, Script Analysis, and Scene Study. These sessions will transpire on December 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 19, and 20. Although December’s workshop will build on the skills learned in November's sessions, this series will focus on popular acting methods and technique. Through various exercises, collaboration, and scene work, participants will learn how to develop richer characters and more truthful performance.

Anyone interested can enroll online at mtactors.com or register in person on a workshop day at 3:30 p.m. at Havre High. Scholarships are also available. For information about scholarships, people are encouraged to contact MAT Youth Activities Director, Angela Pratt at angela@mtactors.com.
