Montana Seed Show Art Show Will See Some Changes in 2023

February 1, 2023

Adult Education Art Classes will be offered at this year's "new and improved" Montana Seed Show Art Show. Superintendent for the Art Show, Mary-Kate French will be teaching two acrylic painting classes. One is called "Montana Bitterroot" and the other is called "Majestic Stallion." The two photographs hint at what class participants will be able to make and take.

Although the Seed Show Committee has been planning for the Montana Seed Show since last year, the group has begun to send out announcements and invitations to participate in this year's event. The 73rd Annual Montana Seed Show will be held at Harlem High School on March 9-11. Among the features will be the Art Show with some new transpirations for 2023.

Superintendent of the Montana Seed Show Art Show, Mary-Kate French, who teaches art at Harlem High School and calls herself an Art Enthusiast, is excited about these changes. She explains that the Art Show features painting, sculpture, and photography. "Handicrafts are not eligible to be entered in the Art Show; however, there is a vendor show where vendors of all kinds are invited to get a table."

In other reminders, French stated, "We will not be holding an art auction this year, but we have some new and exciting changes."

One of those changes will be Adult Education Art Classes. French's hope is that having these on the schedule will draw a larger crowd of art enthusiasts. French herself will be offering two acrylic painting classes. One is called Montana Bitterroot and the other is called Majestic Stallion. She has invited other artists to consider something along similar lines. Guest Artists/Instructors would be responsible for bringing any necessary supplies and determining any participant fees to cover the artist's time and the cost of supplies. The fees collected would then be the artists' to retain. Classes will comfortably accommodate 12-15 participants, who will be signed up as space allows, and there may be a possibility to create repeat sections of popular sections if necessary.

Another addition will be a Quick Art Competition. This will take place on Friday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. and will offer divisions to both adults and students (grades 7-12). Adults will be expected to furnish their own supplies for the contest. Students may also bring their own supplies, but a selection of basic art supplies will be available for youth participants. These will include paper, pencils, colored pencils, ink, and pastels. French stated that pre-registration for this event is not required but appreciated so that she can get an approximate count and make plans accordingly.

The challenge for the Quick Art Competition will be to create a piece of two-dimensional art in an hour's time. The medium will be the artist's choosing, but the final product should be between the 8" x 10" minimum and 16" x 20" maximum size limit. Just prior to the contest's commencement, those participating will receive the set theme or prompt. The response to the prompt will be open to the artist's interpretation, and the winner in each division will be based on the judge(s)' decision. A $100 prize and a rosette will be awarded to the artist declared the winner. Although a full list of rules is available for anyone requesting it from French, judges will base their decision not only on how well the final product addresses the prompt but on three additional criteria: creativity, skill, and craftsmanship. This artwork will be displayed through Saturday, March 11, which will mark the conclusion of the art show. Artists will then be free to collect or to sell their finished pieces if they wish.

Any artist interested in a space at the show should contact French. She can be reached by phone (406-531-7372) or by email (mt.seed.show.art@gmail.com). Once each artist completes an entry form and pays the entry fee, the Seed Show will provide a 4' x 8' panel with hooks for displaying the artist's work. Additional display boards can be purchased for an additional fee. Artists are also asked to bring their own chairs, card tables, extension cords, or any other necessary items, as the Seed Show does not provide any of these. Artists are also invited to paint, sketch, or create at the Art Show.

Artists may begin setting up on Thursday, March 9 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. A second set-up time has been blocked for Friday morning from 8:-00-10:00. Student artists and participating school groups should coordinate with French for a set-up time. A special, free-of-charge section will be available for students, amateurs, and beginners who do not wish to sell their work. Take down time for all art on display is slated for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 11.

According to French, there will be a Best of Show Artist chosen during the show for both the Adult and Youth Divisions. A rosette and a $100 prize will be awarded in each, as well as individual ribbons for student artists.

"We had a very successful Art Show in 2022 and hope to again this year. I am very excited to invite everyone to participate," French stated.
