Tornadoes Blow Past Chinook 62-35 Saturday Night, Split Season Series

February 8, 2023

Turner junior Ryan Doyle has led the Tornado attack all season long and poured in 29 points Saturday night in their 62-35 win over the Sugarbeeters.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters visited the Turner Tornadoes Saturday night. The 'Beeters won the first meeting between the two teams in Chinook on January 7, 53-45. The Tornadoes looked to turn the tables in front of their home town fans and boy they sure did.

Junior Ryan Doyle scored nine first quarter points to give the Tornadoes a boost early on. The defense stymied the 'Beeter attack from the get go and forced them into some tough spots. At the end of the first quarter the Tornadoes had secured a 15-7 lead.

Chinook senior Brenden Fetter did his part to get the 'Beeter offense going, scoring 10 points before the half. Sophomore Carson Nissen added a three-pointer along the way, but the offense really struggled.

Doyle took care of all the offense the Tornado attack needed. After a big first quarter the junior added another triple and seven points in the second to give Turner a comfortable 27-18 lead at the break.

The Tornadoes really stepped up their attack in the third quarter while the 'Beeter attack still sputtered. Fetter connected again from beyond the arc but the 'Beeters could muster just seven points. Turner however had it rolling.

Junior Trent Billmayer coasted his way in for six points, sophomore Tate Beck drained one from down town and five players combined for twenty points to give the Tornadoes a 47-25 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Coming down the stretch Doyle wasn't done lighting up the scoreboard, cashing for 10 more leading the way to a 62-35 Tornado win over the Sugarbeeters.

Doyle led all scorers with 29 points on the night. Beck finished with 11 for the Tornadoes while Billmayer added 10 in the win. Chinook was led by Fetters 17 points.

Just one week remains in the regular season and each game carries added value when it comes to a team position in the standings and where they will be seeded when the District 9C Tournament gets underway.

Currently the Tornadoes are in sixth place with a 3-9 conference mark and an overall record of 8-8. They will end the season with games at home Friday night against the Big Sandy Pioneers and in Gildford on Saturday against the North Star Knights. Depending on how the weekend goes the Tornadoes could move into the No. 5 Seed.

The Sugarbeeters sit 3-9 in conference play and 4-12 overall. They will host the North Star Knights on Friday and travel to Fort Benton on Saturday to close out the regular season.

Chinook currently sit in seventh, one game behind Turner and North Star in the win/loss column. Taylor points factor in making the chances of Chinook moving up a spot or two is highly unlikely.

The District 9C Tournament will take place at the Havre High School Gymnasium, February 15-18. The top three teams will advance to the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls the following week.
