Nick Turner to Take Over as Head Golf Coach for the Chinook Sugarbeeters

March 1, 2023

Nick Turner, Family Consumer Science Teacher for Chinook Jr./Sr. High School has been hired to be the next Golf Coach for the 'Beeters.

Mike Seymour has mentored the Chinook High School Golf teams since its beginning and has decided to step down this year in order to follow his daughter during the Track and Field season. The Chinook School Board named his replacement at their Regular School Board meeting February 13, 2023. Nick Turner, Family Consumer Science teacher at the school has been selected to fill the position.

Turner didn't hesitate to submit his name when the opening came, "I decided to apply for the golf coach position because it is a sport that I've been passionate about for quite some time. I've always been interested in coaching and I felt like golf was the sport that I have the most experience with."

Turner expresses a long history of being involved with the game, " I've been golfing for a long time. I first picked up a set of clubs when I was about 10 years old. I spent my summers playing golf every day with my grandparents. I also played high school golf for Havre High and have been playing golf league at Beaver Creek and Chinook for years." All those years amount to a quality resume, "I feel like my experience with the game paired with my 12 years' teaching experience will make for a good base to become a successful golf coach.

When asked if his understanding of the game in combination with his position in the school go hand in hand with teaching the game of golf to the younger kids, "I would think so. I'd like to think that I'm a decent teacher with lots of patients which is exactly what is needed to teach someone to golf."

Unlike other sports most of the kids are genuinely new to the sport and Turner looks forward to working with this years squad, "I'm looking forward to teaching all levels of the game. I want to help the older athletes develop their game and look for ways to take strokes off of their rounds. I'm also very much looking forward to teaching the basics to students who have very little experience golfing."

Seymour did a great job bringing the program along from the get go and Turner is looking forward to his advice, "I've got some big shoes to fill for sure. I've been chomping at the bit to pick Mikes brain about the program but he's been a little busy with girls' basketball. I'll be hunting him down as soon as basketball season is over.

Turner is grateful he will have an Assistant to help out, "I was very relieved to find out that Brent Schellin is planning on coming back to coach with me. His experience with the game and with the program is going to be paramount in the success of the CHS golf team."

The first day of practice is right around the corner and as of now what his team will look like is pretty undecided, "I'm not sure how many kids will be going out for the golf team this year. There will be a meeting after school next week for kids to sign up. I have heard from quite a few kids that they are excited to have me as their coach which is promising.
