Harlem Swim team Hosts; Chinook & Harlem swimmers perform well

The Chinook Lions and Harlem swim teams each had excellent showings at the annual Harlem Invitational swim meet, July 1-2. The Chinook team took home an incredible 8 high point awards, while Harlem claimed one, along with excellent performances by multiple additional swimmers.

Chinook nearly ran the gamut with high point winners in the 8 and under girls division, 9-10 boys, 13-14 boys and girls and 15+ boys and girls. Harlem claimed the 11-12 girls high point award.

Starting things off with the youngest age group, Chinook's Sylvi Harwood earned 1st place in the 50 free (42.32), 1st place in the 25 backstroke (23.74) and 5th place in the 25 free (20.82) to earn high point for the 8 and under girls.

For the 9-10 year-old boys, Chinook's Tyler Stephens led the pack, taking home first place in all his events: 50 free (35.65), 100 free (1:23:69) and 50 backstroke (49.67 to win highpoint. Following right behind, Calvin Frye had a fantastic meet with 2nd place performances in each of his events: 100 IM (2:06:31), 50 breast (1:03.46) and 100 free (1:56.17). Teammate Mariah Huravitch had solid performances in the 9-10 girls group placing 2nd in all her events, also: 100 IM (1:42:27), 50 free (37.20) and 50 fly (44.72).

Harlem's Ciana Johnson crushed all three of her races in the 11-12 girls division, winning first place in the 50 backstroke (36.08), 50 free (29.15) and 100 free (1:05:08) to take high point honors. Chinook's Amanda Finley also won an event, the 50 fly (47.08), in the 11-12 girls division, to go along with 3rd place in the 200 free and 4th place in the 50 back. For the boys in the 11-12 age group, Cynnloch Gibson had a great day winning the 200 IM (3:34.59) and taking second place in both the 50 breast (46.32) and 50 back (44.56).

Chinook dominated both the 13-14 age groups and 15 + age groups, with Harlem also showing well. Katie Tilleman continued her dominance with solid victories in all her events to win the girls 13-14 high point: 50 free (26.15), 100 back (1:13.06) and 50 fly (29.15). Teammate Lori Mord also won an event taking first in the 200 IM with a time of 3:00.55, while claiming 3rd in the 100 free (1:11.05) and 4th in the 50 free (31.59).

Baylee Johnson from Harlem also did very well in the 13-14 girls group, winning both the 100 free (1:05.08) and 200 free (2:30.57), and finishing third in the 50 free (30.81).

For the boys in the 13-14 group, Chinook won a total of 7 events. Walter Shoen and Bryce Elliot each earned high point with perfect races on the day. Elliot earned 1st place in the 200 IM (2:51:72), 50 fly (32.23), 200 free (2:12.64). Shoen also had three wins, his coming in the 50 free (26.33), 100 free (58.62) and 100 backstroke (1:16.82). Finally, Kolton DePriest had a great day winning the 100 breast (1:21.65) and finishing second to teammates in the 100 free (59.27) and 200 free (2:16.05).

Not to be outdone, Chinook had similar success in the 15+ age group. For the boys, both Brockton Elliot and Dentin DePriest claimed high point honors with wins in all of their events, and Colton Matkin also had a victory.

Brockton won the 200 IM (2:24.94), 50 fly (26.88) and 100 fly (1:04.01). Dentin won the 100 breast (1:10.79), 100 free (54.04) and 400 free (4:30.22). Matkin won the 100 back (1:14.67), along with finishing 2nd in the 50 fly (28.31) and 3rd in the 50 free (24.74).

Landen Gray of Harlem also had an exceptional meet for the 15+ boys group. He claimed first place in the 50 free (23.87), 2nd place in the 100 free (54.40) and 3rd place in the 50 fly (29.39).

Finally, Britton Elliot finished out the victories with first place swims in the 15+ girls division 50 free (25.69), 100 free (57.64) and 50 fly (29.71) to earn the final high point for Chinook at this meet.

These strong wins across the board bode well for both Chinook Lions and Harlem teams as the progress through the season.
