Comedy Promises Teary-Eyed Laughter

October 11, 2023

Anyone who missed opening night of the Montana Actors’ Theatre (MAT) production Lend me a Tenor has several chances yet to see the show. On October 12-14 and October 19-21, Valley Furniture will again present Ken Ludwigs’s version of this drama. Evening performances begin at 8:00 p.m., and matinees begin at 2:00 p.m. Director Dr. Grant Olson promises “a night of non-stop laughter and theatrical brilliance!”

In this comedy set in 1934, the world of opera collides with chaotic farce as a renowned tenor’s arrival at a Cleveland hotel sparks a chain of mishaps and mistaken identities. The Lend me a Tenor cast will feature Barry Brownlee as Max, Sami Brownlee as Maggie, Martin Holt as Saunders, Ian Munson as Tito Merelli, Brooke Kline as Maria, Mark Cichosz as Bellhop, Bri Cote as Diana, and Angela Murri as Julia.

As the plot unfolds, Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world-famous singer Tito Merelli for one night only as the star of the opera. Known as Il Stupendo, Merelli is considered the greatest tenor of his generation. However, Merelli arrives late, and through a series of mishaps, he is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. Given Merelli’s unusually low and undetectable pulse, Saunders and his assistant Max believe Merelli is dead.

In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to dress in Merelli’s costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Although Max succeeds and lives up to his idol, Merelli eventually regains consciousness and gets into an identical costume, ready to perform. Now two opera singers are wearing the same costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo.

According to MAT’s Marketing Director Andi Daniel, this is a show with “rapid-fire humor and unforgettable characters. This production promises an evening of side-splitting entertainment. Don’t miss your chance to witness the pandemonium – get your tickets now and join us for a riotous night of Lend Me a Tenor!”

Tickets are available locally at Havre Chamber of Commerce, The Computer Center, & Company Apparel, or Bear Paw Meats. Tickets can also be obtained online at mtactors.com.
