The Book Challenge for November is to read a book about a different culture, either fiction or nonfiction. If you have completed the October Book Challenge be sure to contact the library to have your name entered to win a gift certificate from a local business.

The library will be closed Friday, November 10 in observance of Veterans Day.

Heather Jorgenson will present the program “Sharks: Friends or Foes” November 16, 7 P.M. at the library.

Be sure to keep up with all the happenings at the library on our Facebook page or website at http://www.harlempubliclibrary.org.

Did you know the library is a sponsor of the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program? Parents of infants, toddlers and preschoolers are encouraged to register their child. When the child registers they will receive a free board book! Keep track each time you read a book with your child; even if you read the same book over and over. When you reach 500 books the library will reward your child with a prize and when they reach the goal of 1000 they win another prize. Contact the library for more information.

The library and the Friends of the Library are interested in exploring services and programs the senior citizens in our area may be interested in. We hope to provide a place for seniors to have their social and educational needs met. We are asking that you complete a questionnaire available at the library and on our Facebook page to guide us in our planning.

New suspense novels include “The Traitor Among Us,” an Elena Standish novel, by Anne Perry; “The Raging Storm,” a Detective Matthew Venn novel by Ann Cleeves; “The Longmire Defense” by Craig Johnson; and “Pay Back in Death” by J.D. Robb.

“Properties of Thirst” is written by Marianne Wiggins. This is the story of Rocky Rhodes and his fight to save his California ranch from the L.A. Water Corporation amid the larger backdrop of WWII. When a Japanese interment camp is built adjacent to his land Rocky is forced to face the larger impact of the war at home.

Patrick deWitt is the author of “The Librarianist.” Introvert and retired librarian Bob Comet passes his solitary life surrounded by books and small comforts in Portland, Oregon. After encountering a confused elderly woman on his daily walk, he returns her to the senior center that is her home. Soon he becomes a volunteer there and opens himself to a community of strange peers. Over time the events of his life and the details of his character are revealed.
