Missoula Children's Theatre Performances Will Take the Stage This Weekend

January 17, 2024

Students from Chinook Public Schools have been busy this past week working with representatives from the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT). The cast of students and crew from Missoula have been preparing for their performance of Robin Hood which will take place this Saturday, January 20, in the Lloyd D. Sweet Auditorium. There will be two presentations of the play; the first at 1:30 p.m., followed by a later show at 4:00 p.m.

Set long ago in the magical, mythical Sherwood Forest, the play tells the story of Robin Hood. Along with his Merry Band of colorful characters, Robin Hood seeks the help of the Foresters to waylay the Aristocrats. As commoners set out to rescue Maid Marion and her Maid, Prince John tries to stay calm as his Sheriff, guards, and horsemen botch Robin’s arrest—thanks in large part to the aromatic Skunks.

According to the MCT organization, “Wacky humor and an original score add to this fresh new look at a legendary outlaw in a legendary time.” The Robin Hood script was adapted and written by Michael McGill with music and lyrics by McGill as well.

The two MCT representatives directing Robin Hood in Chinook are Yasein Aksel and Hannah Bergman. Aksel, who was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, graduated from the University of Memphis with a BFA in musical theatre. She described her affiliation with MCT as one way to follow her aspirations. “I am stoked to be touring with the Missoula Children’s Theatre,” she stated.

Bergman also expressed her pleasure by saying, “I am thrilled to be touring with the Missoula Children’s Theatre this season!”

Originally an actor/singer from Indianapolis, Indiana, Bergman has spent the last five years working professionally while obtaining her BFA in musical theatre from the University of Tampa.

In order to get ready for the show, Aksel and Bergman held auditions on Monday, January 15 in the Meadowlark Elementary School gymnasium. These were open to all students, K-12. Once chosen, the cast of young actors and actresses broke into groups to rehearse in the school’s cafeteria and music rooms. They learned and practiced lines, songs, and movements all week and will step on the stage to showcase their talent this Saturday.
