Harlem gets by Wolf Point, beats Box Elder, falls to Fairview

The Harlem Lady Cats had a busy week on the court. First they were at home for a non-conference clash with the Box Elder Bears this past Thursday. The Lady Cats topped the Bears 73-45. Friday night, they were in Fairview where they fell to the Warriors 53-41. On Saturday, the girls were in Wolf Point for a District 2B clash with the Wolves. The Lady Cats hung on for a 64-61 win. The weekend action left the Lady Cats with a 5-3 record.

On Thursday night, the Lady Cats welcomed the Box Elder Bears to town. Junior Jaden Blackcrow dropped a three-point bucket, freshman Aaraya Mount accounted for six points off three buckets inside. Junior Raelynne Briere scored, giving the Lady Cats a slim one-point lead, 15-14 heading into the second quarter. Mount continued to have the hot hand for the Lady Cats in the second, knocking down a pair of triples and scoring 11 points. Senior Emma Billmayer added four points to the total while the defense kept the Bears in check. Harlem led 38-30 heading into halftime.


The second half belonged to the Lady Cats as they opened up a big lead in the third quarter. Billmayer scored nine points, including one from downtown, helping Harlem take a 54-37 lead into the fourth quarter. Blackcrow dropped in two from distance and scored ten points down the stretch, paving the way for the Lady Cats to secure a 73-45 win. Mount led the way with 26 points in the win, Billmayer added 16 while Blackcrow finished with 13.

Friday night, the girls headed east to Fairview to challenge the Warriors in a District 2B conference contest. Harlem found themselves in a defensive struggle early on, trailing 9-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Cats got the offense going before the half, getting six points from Briere and five from senior Jocelyn Lambert to take a 24-19 lead into the break. The third quarter belonged to the Warriors as they outscored the Lady Cats 17-5 to take a 36-29 advantage into the fourth quarter of action. In the end, it was Fairview taking a 53-41 win over the Lady Cats. The Lady Cats were led on the night by Lambert with 13 points, Mount with 11 markers and Briere added 10 points to the mix.


Saturday Harlem faced an old-time foe in the Wolf Point Wolves. Sophomore Gracie Sanchez connected from distance, Briere scored five, including one from beyond the arc, and Mount dropped in a pair from distance to power the Lady Cats to an 18-8 lead. Harlem extended their lead to 37-22 by intermission. Billmayer took over the second quarter, going 6-7 from the charity stripe.

Wolf Point came out firing to start the second half, outscoring the Lady Cats 17-9 to cut the Harlem lead to seven at 46-39. The Lady Cats regrouped down the stretch and played a solid eight minutes. Billmayer scored eight in the final stanza and Mount added six, leading the way for the Lady Cats to secure a 64-51 win. Billmayer led the Lady Cats with 27 points on the night, Mount finished with 12 points and Briere added 11 in the win.

Harlem will next take court this Thursday when they will hit the road for a District 2B clash in Malta with the M-ettes. Friday they will head to Glasgow to take on the Scotties
