Harlem Students place 2nd in Congressional App Challenge

March 20, 2024

I personally wanted to share some positive information/news on the team that I was an Advisor for during the 2022-2023 School Year with Code Girls United. We ended the year with 4 Girls on our Team; three 5th Grade Students and one 6th Grade student at the time. During the year of building their app and deciding what they wanted to bring awareness to with their app these students worked very hard and excelled as a team. I was extremely proud to see them grow from the beginning of the year to the end of the year during that school year. At the end of Spring 2023 their app was submitted to the Congressional App Challenge. They had to create a business plan and explain how they got from point a to point b throughout the year. When submitting their app they had to submit a video of themselves explaining their app, how to work the app, and the meaning behind their app. Some of you might remember me telling you about it during last school year.

The following students were the students that were a part of the Harlem Kitty Code Team:

1. Alyauna Brockie(current 6th Grade Student)

2. Carrigen Stiffarm(current 6th Grade Student)

3. Wynnter Anderson(current 7th Grade Student)

4. Kaydee Brown(6th Grade Student, but transferred out)

On February 6th, 2024 it was announced in a letter to each of our four students that their app won 2nd Place in the Congressional App Challenge of the 118th Congress.

Below is part of the letter they received:

Congratulations on winning second place for the Congressional App Challenge of the 118th Congress. Your app Coding Against Abuse addresses a huge problem across our state, and I commend you for creating an app that can help change someone’s life.

Over 11,000 students registered for this year’s competition – creating 3,645 fully-functioning apps for 374 Members of Congress across 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and the District of Columbia. I am excited to see the enthusiasm for coding and hopeful for the future impact our young Americans will make in computer science and STEM.

Thank you for participating in the Congressional App Challenge. I look forward to seeing how you apply the skills you learned in creating Coding Against Abuse to other areas of your life and hopefully we will meet in DC.

Sincerely,

Matt M. Rosendale, Sr.

Member of Congress

I am over the moon impressed and proud of these girls, what they accomplished and receiving the recognition of 2nd place in the Congressional App Challenge.
