Colonel Richard (Dick) Laverne Jacobsen, US Army Retired, from Scottsdale, AZ passed away on August 25, 2016. He was born in Chinook, MT to J.R. (Rich) and Faye (Upshaw) Jacobsen on August 30, 1930. Dick graduated from Chinook High School, Western Montana College (UM Dillon) and Eastern Montana College (MSU Billings).
Dick joined the Montana Army National Guard in 1948, which began his lifelong and distinguished career in the U.S. Army. Dick met Shirley Van Camp at Fort MacArthur, CA on April 4, 1954 and they were married on September 3, 1956 in Basel, Switzerland. Dick held command and staff management positions that took him and his family on assignments around the world (Arizona, California, Kansas, Maryland, Oklahoma, Virginia (Pentagon twice), Germany, Iran, Korea (twice)), including ROTC at the University of Arizona and as military attaché at the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran.
He was a graduate of U.S. Army Command, General Staff College, and Logistics Executive Development Course. He retired from active duty in 1978 and took logistical and administrative management positions with American companies in Iran and Israel. A resident of Vi at Grayhawk in Scottsdale since 2007, Dick served on a number of committees, volunteered in the Care Center, and was a regular at the Gin card table and on the putting course.
Dick is preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Shirley, his parents and his brother, Larry. He is survived by his son, Jeff Jacobsen (friend Lisa) of Okemos, MI; daughter, Jill Anderson (Dale) of Bozeman, MT; grandchildren, Katherine (Aaron) of Westminster, CO and Daniel (OH); brother, Jim (Carol) Jacobsen of Helena, MT, brother-in-law Quentin (Candy) Van Camp of Peoria, AZ, and many cousins, nephews and nieces. In addition, the friends from the life communities are part of his extended family. Dick was an avid sports enthusiast and a man of few words, yet they were always thoughtful and were often sprinkled with his dry wit and sarcasm. He always welcomed people with open arms and a radiant smile. Our lives are eternally enriched through his roles as a husband, father and friend. Cremation has taken place and his ashes, along with Shirley's ashes, will be spread at a family celebration in the future.
