    The Chinook Lions Club held its monthly meeting recently at the Blaine County Museum. The club, formed 100 years ago this year, is the fourth oldest Lions Club in Montana. The special meeting in the museum gave members an opportunity to experience the exhibit prepared by Museum staff and thank them for their efforts to record the club's history.     ZURICH, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is announcing and inviting the public to comment on a proposal that will reconstruct about 7 miles of US Highway 2 (US 2), on either side of Zurich. The project begins at Battle Creek Bridge, and extends east, ending west of 8 Mile Road. Proposed work includes widening the shoulders to 8 feet and installing a 4-lane passing section between mile markers 410.2 and 412.   • Sweet Memorial Nursing Home Awarded Grant

    Sweet Memorial Nursing Home was recently awarded a $3,000 Ag West Rural Community Grant to help fund an updated and expanded surveillance camera system. The current system is outdated and there are also areas of the facility that have little to no camara coverage at all.     Last year members of the scholarship committee at the Chinook Presbyterian last did a study of the ten-year history of their scholarship program. That program, during the last decade, awarded financial grants to 38 graduating seniors from Chinook High who planned to pursue post-secondary educational programs.     CHINOOK – During the fall of 2024, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks wardens requested help from the public in poaching cases involving headless deer and elk on private property in Blaine and Phillips Counties. After an extensive investigation, Marvin Cole, 29, of Lodgepole had charges filed in Blaine and Phillips Counties alleging his role in the in the unlawful killing, possession, waste, and sale of deer and elk antlers.     Helen (Holmes) Parnell, 98, of Chinook, passed away Friday, June 13, 2025. Helen was born January 9, 1927, to Harold and Mildred (Halvorson) Holmes. Helen attended Chinook High School where she was active in many activities, including student council. Helen graduated from Chinook High School in 1945. Following graduation, she worked at the Blaine County courthouse. On February 22, 1947, Helen married William V. Parnell of Harlem.
