This photo shows technicians preparing a patient for proton beam radiation therapy. The technology, first used in 2006, delivers a proton beam to destroy cancer tumors. Proton beams can be focused to a very small target and, unlike conventional X-ray therapy, do not destroy tissue around, in front of or behind the targeted area. Only about 30 of these machines are currently being used in the U.S..
