The Chinook Sugarbeeter girls basketball team continued their winning ways this past weekend at the Chester season opening tournament.

Thursday the girls opened the new season with a stiff test from a solid Great Falls Central Catholic team earning a hard fought 43-38 victory.

Saturday the team wasn’t challenged nearly as much as they cruised to a 43-21 win over the Dutton/Brady Diamondback to start 2-0.

Chinook trailed early but slowly chipped away at the Mustang lead before securing the win.

Sophomore Abby Ellison had a strong start to the season as she knocked down a pair of triples in the contest as part of her game high 16 point effort.

Senior Brooke Nicholson was a shut down defender and contributed eight points in the win. Junior post Brooke Elliot tossed in six markers in the win.

Saturdays contest was firmly in Chinooks control from the outset. Nicholson drained a pair of three-pointers in the opening stanza and sophomore Sierra Swank added a triple of her own to help propel Chinook to a 17-1 advantage heading into the second quarter.

The ‘Beeters cruised the rest of the contest. Nicholson would finish with a game high 21 points in the win. Elliot added nine from her post position.

Abby Ellison scores two of her game high 16 points in the 'Beeters season opening win over Great Falls Central.

Head coach Mollie Rose was pleased with teams success to start the season, “It’s a good start to the season. We were able to see what we need to work on, what we need capitalize on.”

The team got to try some new things and meet some new faces, “Some of the younger girls really stepped up and worked hard,” said Rose. “They did whatever they were asked to do.”

The ‘Beeters will open conference play this weekend before heading into the holiday break.

Friday the girls will travel to Hays to face the Thunderbirds. Saturday the team will host Big Sandy in their home opener. Tuesday they will travel to Chester to face the Hawks in the final game of 2015.

They will return to the court January 5 when they will face the Box Elder Bears in a huge District 9C clash.

“We’re looking forward to opening conference play. We’re excited to see where the season takes us,” concluded Rose
