Chester J-I gets past Hays/L.P. 45-39

December 23, 2015

Thunderbird freshman Raleigh Kirkaldie scores against Chinook Friday night.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds took an 0-3 record into their conference clash with the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks Saturday afternoon but one thing was for certain, they were there to compete and compete they did.

The Hawks squeaked out a 45-39 win over the young Thunderbird squad but they had to survive a late charge by the Thunderbirds to do it.

Hays/Lodge Pole fell behind early 17-4. A strong second quarter brought the Thunderbirds back within reach as they outscore the Hawks 15-9 in the quarter to trim the deficit to 26-19 at the break.

The Hawks stretched the lead a bit in the third but again the Thunderbirds had an answer as they chipped away at the lead throughout.

Time would run out on the Thunderbird comeback leaving them six points short as they fell 45-39 to fall to 0-4 on the young season.

Eighth grader Mulleah Stiffarm had a monster game as she torched the nets for 26 points to help keep the Thunderbirds close.

The Hays/L.P. game against North Star will appear in next week's edition. The Thunderbirds will begin the new year January 2 when they host Big Sandy.
