What 'Cher Point

Kudos to the Havre and Chinook wrestlers for taking home State trophies. These two programs are as good as it gets for prep wrestling and it is a great testament to coaching, community support and drive of young wrestlers that they do so well year after year!

Havre High Football is losing Mark Samson. The former Northern football coach led the Blue Ponies for one year to one of the best football seasons they have had for some time. He is going to be the head coach for the Great Falls Bison. We wish him well with the Bison and just wish he had stayed in Havre a little longer. Sampson is a great coach and will really be missed here.

There were some last prep basketball standings before district tournament action this last weekend. On the boys side in Central A, Havre ended up second. Harlem ended up fourth in 2B and in 9C it was Box Elder followed by Chester, Joplin and Inverness, then the Thunderbirds and then Chinook. Turner was next to last and Big Sandy ended up last.

In the girls side of the ledger Havre was first in Central A. In 2B Harlem was fourth and in 9C it was Box Elder, Chinook, Fort Benton, CJI, North Star, Turner, the Thunderbirds and Big Sandy.

Lordy, Lordy, someone caught two walleye in Swan Lake. The Montana Fish and Game Commission is falling to pieces over this news. The fact is that everyone but FWP want walleye in lakes west of the Continental Divide. But FWP has decreed that there should be no walleye west of the Divide. Sports sellers are very angry when they see the Governor’s Cup at Fort Peck, Fresno and other walleye tournaments making huge amounts of money and they sit west of the Divide with only a couple of Flathead Lake tournaments a year. Why can’t we have walleye tournaments they ask? As to the walleye cohabitating with other species of fish, when I was dam tender of Beaver Creek Reservoir at the north end of Beaver Creek Park I think there were fourteen or fifteen different types of fish there and all living together happily and getting big and causing big catches!

Still, though, FWP knows best even though this was the same FWP who accidentally killed all the salmon in Flathead Lake causing that great migration of salmon into Lake McDonald which was watched by humans, bears and thousands of eagles to disappear off the face of the earth. Maybe sports enthusiasts know a little something as well.

I bet there are plenty of walleye in those western lakes. FWP has just not discovered how many.

Well, the State of Montana in the name of the University of Montana treated their Grizzly quarterback, Jordon Johnson, guilty before he was proven guilty to a rape charge. After a trial, Johnson was declared innocent. So, now Johnson has been awarded $245.000.00 to drop his case that school officials mishandled the rape charge when he was quarterback for the team.

I was looking at the NBA this week just to see who is going great guns and who is not. In the Eastern Conference it is Toronto and Boston in the Atlantic division, Atlanta and Miami in the Southeastern Division and Cleveland and Indiana in the Central Division.

In the west it is San Antonio and Memphis, in the Southwest Division, Oklahoma City and Portland, in the Northwest Division and in the Pacific Division it is Golden State and the LA Chargers. Two teams out of that mess are going to vie for the top of the heap this season.

That’s my story and I am sticking to it. Go Thunderbirds!
