The Chinook Rod and Gun Club will host its fourth Annual Youth Fishing Day on Saturday, June 4, north of Chinook at the Dry Fork Reservoir. Organizers said, "It's not competitive fishing, it's about getting kids and parents out for a day of fishing and fun." There is no charge for the event which will run from 9am-3pm. A BBQ lunch will be for sale and every kid will receive a Chinook Rod and Gun Club T-shirt.

Elmer Zarn, club member and head of the Fishing Day program, said all kids 15 years and younger are welcome to participate. He added, "Fishing rods and reels can be borrowed at Finley's Food Farm in Chinook. We expect the Fish, Wildlife and Parks folks from the Glasgow office will also bring some rods and reels that the kids can use." Asked about expected numbers of guests, Zarn said, "The number has been around a hundred each year, but turnout depends on what other activities are going on that draw kids. The three prior years we had really great weather for fishing."

The promotional poster states "must abide by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks fishing regulations" and that means participants must also comply with species' daily catch limits. The Rod and Gun Club encourages 'catch and release.' The fishing equipment is rod and reel only and fishermen should bring their own bait or lures.

There is no required sign-up before the event but all kids must be accompanied by an adult during the day of fishing. On the day of the event there will be a mandatory registration at fishing headquarters at the entrance to Dry Fork Reservoir. Each participant must complete a liability and release form before they begin fishing.

To reach Dry Fork Reservoir, turn north on Elloam Road/Montana Highway 325 (about two miles east of Chinook on Highway 2) and follow Highway 325 to the end of the pavement (about five miles). At the sign for "Dry Creek Reservoir" turn right onto the gravel road and go approximately two miles to the reservoir. If you have specific questions about Fishing Day, call Elmer Zarn at 357-4235.
