James "Jim" Harbolt

Chinook, MT

James "Jim" Harbolt, 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 5, 2016. He was born to Daisy and Glenn Harbolt on August 21, 1933 in Chinook, Montana where he also graduated High School. Jim had two sisters who have already passed on, Joan Stremcha and June McBride. Jim is survived by his brother, Ray "Chuck" Harbolt. Jim proudly served in the Air Force during the Korean War then returned home and used his GI Bill to graduate from University of Montana in 1959. He worked briefly in Helena, Montana, and then moved to Portland, Oregon in 1960 where he met the "Love of His Life", Audrey Louise Ruppel, and they were wed April 15, 1961. Together, they have 4 children: Jim (wife Monica), Tim (wife Heidi), Tom (wife Debbie), and Mary.

Jim moved his family to West Des Moines, Iowa in 1969 and went to work for American Republic Life Insurance Company while attending, and graduating from, Drake University Law School. He remained with American Republic Insurance Company until 1975 when he moved the family back to Portland, Oregon where he took a job with Pacific Northwest Life Insurance Company; he became President and CEO of the company soon after he started. In 1996, Jim found his true career passion which was, as he said "doing the Lord's work," with Concordia Lutheran University Foundation. He remained with the Foundation as one of their top fundraisers until his retirement on July 31, 2011.

Over his lifetime, Jim loved gardening, golfing, fishing, attending his kids' and grandkids' sporting and musical events and spending time with family. Jim was truly a Man of Faith who loved his savior and passed this faith along to his family. Jim served in various Church leadership roles over the years; elder, president, and, perhaps his favorite, Sunday School Teacher and High School Youth Group Leader.

Family was very important to Jim and he was a proud "Papa" of 10 grandchildren, Josh, Jacob, Benjamin, Katie, Joel, Mitch, Maddie, Jackson, Julia, and Hudson. They will always remember his love, smile, laugh, and the twinkle in his eye.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 29, 2016 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 13401 SW Benish St., Tigard, OR 97223
