What 'Cher Point

July 20, 2016

I accidently tuned in to the ESPY awards on ABC television last Wednesday.

It wasn’t the awards I will remember. But I will long remember the beginning of the program when LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade all came out dressed in very somber clothes and called for an end of the killings that are happening around the United States. Specifically they talked about Dallas, St. Paul and Baton Rouge.

What they had to say was very moving. I think that when strong athletes like those four are, get up and talk, young people will listen to them. I think they did an amazing amount of good in what they did at the beginning of the ESPY program. At Least I hope so!

By the time you read these words Justin Tucker from the Ravens, Trumaine Johnson from the Rams, Eric Berry from the Chiefs, Alshon Jeffery from the Bears, Muhammad Wilkerson from the Jets, Kirk Cousins from the Redskins and Von Miller from the Broncos will have all signed long term contracts or elected just to go from year to year which is not what NFL players like to do.

Meanwhile in the land of the Patriots, Tom Brady did not throw the greatest Hail Mary of his life. Instead he groveled and decided to accept the four game suspension at the beginning of this season. That could wreck the season for the Patriots.

Brady had been suspended for four games and heavily fined by Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner, for Brady’s supposed role in the underinflated footballs a few years back. Since that time the case has been in several court rooms with several different outcomes. The last outcome favored the NFL.

The Hail Mary was that Brady could have tried to get the Supreme Court to listen to his case.

In the meantime Patriot coaches are trying to get back up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo ready to start the season. Maybe it will turn out great. You know when Drew Bledsoe got hurt, that was how Tom Brady got the starting quarterback’s job with the Patriots in the first place. However, it is thought that Jimmy Garoppolo is no Tom Brady and if he can hold things together for a couple of wins during the suspension time that will be wonderful.

It will be the first four games that Brady misses. One reason that Brady elected to give up was that no one knew if the Supreme Court would even hear the case or when. He could have ended up with those four suspended games during the playoffs. Not good. Not good for the Patriots and Tom Brady this year no matter how one looks at it.

I saw a headline the other day that Alex Singleton is playing world class football for the Calgary Stampeders. Montana Bobcat fans will remember Alex Singleton as a very good linebacker for the Bobcats. Way to go Alex!

In NBA news Tim Duncan is leaving the NBA after nineteen seasons. He plays with the San Antonio Spurs. Duncan was an under rated NBA player and under rated or not he will be missed by the league. Just one stat. San Antonio went to the playoffs every year that Tim Duncan was on the team. Will he be missed? Bet he will!

That is my story and I am sticking to it. Go Thunderbirds!
