Monte was born on September 6, 1967, in Fort Belknap to Marvin and Margaret (Stiffarm) Flying. He was raised in Fort Belknap, attending the Mission Grade School and Hays-Lodgepole schools, moving first to the Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, UT, and then the Chemawa Indian School in Salem, OR, where he graduated in 1985. He played basketball in high school, excelling at the sport. Monte returned to Fort Belknap after graduation, where he worked as a firefighter for the Tribal Emergency Services for many years. He met Louwanna LongFox in 2001, and the couple married in 2007.

Monte was a kind, giving man who loved to do things for others. He enjoyed gardening and working with horses. If he was teasing you, you knew he liked you. He especially enjoyed teaching others to ride and care for horses. His daily routine always included a nice long walk, and he also liked to play cards and Yahtzee. Monte had a head for sports statistics, and he knew the basketball, baseball, and football stats like the back of his hand. He really enjoyed watching basketball and football, with his favorite teams being the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys. Monte loved to take "Wanna" to the Fort Belknap Casino for a night out, and really loved being "Papa" to her grandchildren.

Monte was preceded in death by his father Marvin "Sonny Man" Flying, and his uncles Aloysius "Dudley" Stiffarm and Emerson Stiffarm, Sr.
