One of the goals of the Harlem Public Library this year is to increase circulation. We challenge you to read more books from the library in 2017. The 2017 Reading Challenge encourages you to read at least 52 books this year. To help you keep on track, each month you read 4 books contact the library and your name will be entered into a drawing for a $10 gift certificate from a local business. If you complete the challenge for the year, you will be entered into a drawing for a fabulous gift basket which will include a $25 Visa gift card!

Remember Lego Club for all ages meets on Thursdays from 6-7 P.M. Preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult. Story Time for ages 3 to grade 5 meets on Fridays at 10 A.M. Books and Babies for infants/toddlers with their parents or caregivers meets on Tuesdays at 10 A.M.

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, Feb. 8, 7 P.M. when the Harlem High School F1 Team “Harlem United” will do a presentation at the library. They will share what the F1 competition is all about and their experiences competing at the state, national and world level. This will be the first Learn at the Library program for this year. Refreshments will be served, so bring a friend!

“The Inkeeper of Ivy Hill” is the first volume of the Tales from Ivy Hill series by Julie Klassen. The owner of the coaching inn of the village of Ivy Hill dies suddenly leaving his wife, Jane, with the task of managing the inn and finding a way to repay the impending loan. Jane turns to her less-than-willing mother-in-law for help. As the bank applies pressure Jane relies on friends old and new, including a mysterious gentleman who has secret plans of his own.

Val McDermid is the author of “Out of Bounds.” Cold case detective Karen Pirie must unravel the connection of a teenager who crashes a stolen car and ends up in a coma to an unsolved murder from twenty-two years ago. Drawn to a mystery that has its roots in a terrorist bombing Karen’s intuition tells her something doesn’t add up.

The latest from bestselling author Jodi Picoult is “Small Great Things.” Ruth Jefferson is an experienced labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital. She begins a routine checkup on a newborn when she is reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists who insist that Ruth, who is African American, not be allowed to touch their child. The hospital complies, but when the baby goes into cardiac arrest when Ruth is alone in the nursery, she has an unthinkable decision to make.

“The Green Tunnel” by D.V. Wilson is set in Great Falls, Montana. The city is terrorized by a serial killer. The Blackfeet police detective, Travis Eagle, assigned to the case is driven to drink due to a trouble marriage. Crime Scene Investigator Joella Bar-Lev uncovers evidence that could implicate Travis, although she doesn’t believe he could ever commit murder. Together they join forces to find the killer before Travis succumbs to darkness.

Country music superstar, Naomi Judd, brings to readers her story in the book “River of Time.” This biography shares Judd’s journey beginning with her harsh childhood, motherhood at seventeen, being beaten and raped, abandoned with two small children and on to the incredible success as part of the singing duo “The Judds.” She also survived Hepatitis C only to face her desperate fight with Severe Treatment Resistant Depression and anxiety. This is her story of hope in spite of being scarred by trauma.

Other new titles include “The Spy” by Paulo Coelho, “Storm Rising” by Douglas Schofield, and “The Whole Town’s Talking” by Fannie Flagg.
