Wrestlers shine at Chouteau Classic

Chinook senior Tate Niederegger, claimed his fourth Chouteau Classic championship this past weekend. Niederegger won the 145 pound weight class.

The Chinook wrestlers this week took advantage of being able to watch the next level of wrestling. They attended the MSU Northern match against Dickinson State, where they watched Northern win the match 29 to 11. The team witnessed Northern's senior wrestlers and one of their local favorite clinic coaches Ben Stroh win his final home match.

On Friday, they headed to Choteau with Harlem to compete in the Choteau Classic. Seven Wrestlers from Chinook and eight from Harlem went and put their skills to the test against twenty-six other Montana Schools. JT Hauer, Tate Niederegger, Gavin Horn and Reece Hutton advanced onto the second day of the varsity tournament while the other wrestlers spent day two in JV Matches in the adjoining gym. Reese and Tate both advanced to the finals where Reese placed second behind Hunter Mycke from Conrad and Tate took first over Robbie Coleman of Columbus/Absorkee. For Tate, this was his fourth time winning the Choteau Classic. The boys have worked hard all year and they are seeing improvement each week.

This week the Blaine County wrestling teams compete against each other on their home turf. Their journey begins Thursday in Hays-Lodgepole, Friday night is the Chinook mixer

Saturday is the Harlem Invitational. Hays started their program last year and is showing promise with more wrestlers this year.

Harlem senior Reece Hutton, right, wrestled very well at the Classic finishing second in the 205 pound weight class.

The boys will be competing in Malta the following week and Divisionals on February 4th. Those who place in the top four slots at divisionals will advance to state the next week in the Billings Metra where the All Class State Tournament takes place with twelve mats hosting matches consecutively until the finals where they will finish with three mats. One for AA, one for A and one for the combined BC. This is by far the biggest tournament in the state where 624 of the state's best wrestlers meet.

In wrestling the kids compete across all classes all year up to Divisional and State. BC classes are combined in both the Divisional and State where the Wrestlers compete for placing.

There are state champions decided in each class and place trophies are based on the team points earned by the wrestlers during the competition.
