Fort Belknap Mid-Winter Fair "Honoring Our Past"

Philomayne (Shields) Tucker, named Travois Woman, appreciated the value of the Mid-Winter Fair in it’s many aspects. She participated in many areas beginning as a teacher creating an attractive booth to display the work of her elementary school class. These displays allowed the parents to see their children’s best award winning work and the community to enjoy the variety of learning activities the school provided.

She was an energetic advocate especially of the art show. Her brother, George “Sonny” Shields Jr and sister, Georgina Shields Legge were artists that not only influenced her appreciation of art, but also inspired the need to encourage others to develop and show their talents.

She was influential in starting the Sonny Shields art scholarship. She worked with others on the Mid-Winter Fair board helping to raise prize money for the art show contest at the fair.

She received her degree in Elementary Education in 1976 and her Master of Education in 1985. She loved to teach and used her creativity and love to reach children and their parents.

We are still receiving notes of encouragement that tell us of the positive impact she had on children, their parents and people she worked with in many different areas. A journal note she wrote sums up her desire:

Goal: to teach others what I know.

There are many who will miss her smile, helping hands, creative ideas and even her Mary Kay table this year, but as long as they smile as they remember her, she continues to encourage them to try harder and even do things they have never tried before.

She would wish you all a happy Mid-Winter fairing!
