Thunderbirds continue to roll, Chinook and Turner pick up conference wins

Chinook sophomore Brendan Edwards score two first quarter points in Chinooks lopsided 75-38 win over Big Sandy Saturday night, Edwards finished with nine points in the contest.

There are only three weeks left in the High School boys basketball season and the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds continue to roll through their regular season schedule.

The Thunderbirds picked up two more impressive wins knocking off Chinook 60-43 Friday night and then topping the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks 77-24 Saturday to improve to 11-1 on the season and maintain their top seed in The District 9C Standings

The Chinook sugarbeeters bounced back Saturday night with a impressive 75-38 win over the visiting Big Sandy Pioneers to improve to 8 and 4 on the season 5-4 in District 9C play.

The Turner Tornadoes also picked up a conference win after knocking off the Fort Benton Longhorns Saturday 52-47, earlier in the week they had defeated the Dodson Coyotes 59-57.

The Thunderbirds got off to a quick start Friday night against the Chinook Sugarbeeters as they outscored the visitors 13-0 in the opening stanza.

Senior Jace Shambo and Senior Frank RunsAbove each knocked down triples in the opening quarter for the Thunderbirds.

From that point on the two teams played pretty even with both teams scoring 12 points in the second quarter.

Senior Tyson Shambo drained two from beyond the arc for the Thunderbirds and sophomore Cord Schneider added a half-dozen for the Sugarbeeters as the teams entered the halftime locker room with Hays/Lodge Pole on top 25 - 12.

The third quarter resembled the second quarter in nearly every aspect as Chinook gained back outscoring the Thunderbirds 13 -12 in the stanza with Schneider adding nine more points in the quarter for the Sugarbeeters and junior Lance Strike contributing 5 for the Thunderbirds.

Both offenses got things going a bit more in the fourth quarter as Hays/Lodge Pole closed out the game with a 23-18 advantage over the final eight minutes to secure the 60-43 win.

Schneider led all scorers with 22 points for the Sugarbeeters in the contest while senior Kyler Johnson added 10 points to the 'Beeter effort.

The Thunderbirds were led on the night by senior Tyson Shambo's efforts as he chipped in 15 points, RunsAbove added 11, Strike 12 and Jace Shambo 9 in the win.

Saturday the Thunderbirds wasted little time in taking control of the contest against the Hawks racing out at 49-11 halftime lead before securing the 77-24 District 9C win to improve to 11-1 on the season.

The Thunderbirds put forward an extremely balanced attack as Strike and RunsAbove each scored 11, Jace Shambo added 10, senior David Main and senior Kyle Young each scored nine for the Thunderbirds in the contest.

In Chinook's lopsided victory over the Big Sandy Pioneers the 'Beeters raced out to a 24-3 lead after eight minutes and extended the advantage to 48-16 by halftime

Chinook took their foot off the gas in the second half and coasted to 75-38 conference win to improve to 5-4 in District 9C play and 8-4 overall.

Sophomore Isaac Bell led the charge with 18 points, Cord Schneider added 12 points sophomore Riley Kellam chipped in 11, and sophomore Brendan Edwards added 9 in the win for the Sugarbeeters.

The Tornadoes had one of the best weeks of the season today picking up a 59-57 win over Dodson to begin the week.

Turner doubled up the Coyote 18-9 in the opening quarter and extended the advantage 36-19 by halftime.

The third quarter belonged to the Coyotes as they knocked eight points off the lead cutting the Tornado advantage to 48-39 entering the fourth quarter.

The Coyotes continued to put pressure on Turner but the Tornadoes were able to hold on and they got the slim two point win.

Thunderbird All-State point guard Tyson Shambo scores two of his team high 15 points Friday night.

Junior Eddie Harmon led the charge for the Tornadoes with 22 points while sophomore Cody Welch added 18 in the win.

Against the Longhorns Fort Benton held a 31-21 halftime lead but this time it was Turner that made the second-half comeback outscoring the Longhorns 14-7 in the third quarter and 17-11 in the final stanza to pull out the 52-47 conference win.

Welsh was fantastic for the Tornadoes knocking down 24 points in the contest while Harmon added 10.

The District 9C Tournament is just three weeks away and the Thunderbirds currently hold the top seed.

Chinook maintains the four seed while the Tornadoes have the seventh seed. The top two teams at the District 9C Tournament will advance to the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls the following week.

The District 9C Tournament will be played February 15-18 at the Havre High School gym.
