What 'Cher Point

It is Saturday afternoon and the nags are running at Churchill Downs as the Kentucky Derby got underway. It is too close to my deadline to tell you much about the race. More about that next week. For now though it has been raining most of the day in that part of Kentucky and the track is muddy. Classic Empire is the 4 to 1 pre race choice but there is no really dominant horse in this year’s Derby.

What there is are lots of women’s large and floppy hats, lots of men in seersucker suits and strange hats, and many, many mint juleps.

When I moved into Henry Moses’ old cabin up Greenough Gulch on Clear Creek it was mainly for two reasons. One was to have a cabin not connected with my father so that my friends could come out to a place just for us. The other driving force was that in Henry’s old yard was a huge mint patch. So, of course all summer we drank Mint Juleps made by mulling the mint in a glass with some sugar, then filling the glass with bourbon and ice and sipping away on hot summer days on Clear Creek.

One summer Ray and Shirley Clack asked if they could pitch their old hunting tent in my yard. They did and when they came out they added pineapple juice and Southern Comfort to our Mint Juleps and made a concoction that was out of this world.

Then my father showed up and asked if he could move into that cabin with me. That was the end of the bourbon and mint but that is a story for another day. All I know is that those Kentucky Derby people have a very good drink in their incredible Mint Juleps!

Is there no end to Tony Romo’s talents? As most of you Cowboy fans know, their famous quarterback Tony Romo decided to quit the Cowboys or he was let go. Now he is a part of the lead commentating team of Jim Nance and Tony Romo when Phil Simms decided to quit. This can only help CBS.

But now Tony Romo is trying to qualify to play in the US Open. It is a long shot and probably he will not make it but what if he is able to enter the Open and what if he were to win it! It boggles the mind.

In the NFL Draft the very last pick was important. It was the 253rd and final selection of this year’s draft and it was Mississippi’s quarterback Chad Kelly who was chosen by the Denver Broncos. Given the mess in the Denver quarterbacks rooms, this choice might just be what the doctor ordered.

At Ole Miss, Kelly, in two seasons threw for 6800 yards, 50 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

That’s my story and I am sticking to it. Go Thunderbirds!
