Fall weekend provides interesting diversions in Chinook

September 27, 2017

With the suspension of the Sugarbeet Festival, a few organizations and individuals in Chinook took matters into their own hands to create some fall diversions last weekend at the Blaine County Fairgrounds. Despite a rather gloomy start of the weather, the day turned pleasant and a decent sized crowd came to enjoy a car show, do some roping, enjoy a customer appreciation lunch and take in a drive-in movie after dark.

Dan's NAPA store hosted a noon luncheon in the commercial building with sloppy joe's and all the trimmings. The Blaine County Cruisers' car show attracted a lot of varied vehicles and had an international flavor with several entries from Alberta. The car club hosted a drive-in movie, shown on the side of the grandstand, in the evening with concessions by the Chinook FFA.

Over in the arena, pens were set up and livestock was available for a sorting and doctoring competition. Clinton Pankratz, who organized the event, said, "I think it was just bad timing as there is a lot going on and a lot of producers are shipping early." He and a few others did some roping since they had livestock available but the sorting competitions didn't materialize. There were no entrants for the Dutch oven cooking event.

By early afternoon the temperatures were pleasant and the sun was peeking through, occasionally. It was a pleasant first day of fall equinox.
