October 11, 2017

The Chinook Sugarbeeters have improved exponentially since the beginning of the season and carried a two game winning streak in their contest with the Centerville Miners on Friday.

The Miners, leaders of the Northern 8 Man B Subdivision entered with a perfect 4-0 record in the division and stood at 5-1 overall.

The Miners opened the scoring finding the endzone twice, just :17 apart midway through the first quarter to take a early 14-0 lead.

The Sugarbeeters orchestrated a nine play scoring drive that benefited from a pair of big runs from junior Trajan Hannum and a facemask penalty. Chinook quickly moved down the field and had themselves a first and goal situation, three plays later they faced fourth down from the Miner 15 Yard line. Hannum took the snap and barreled his way through the defense and used his blockers to find the end zone to cut the score to 14-6.

The Miners would convert two fourth downs on the ensuing possession before finding paydirt and extending their advantage to 20-6 midway through the second quarter.

Turnovers again plagued the 'Beeter offense and the Miners turned a 'Beeter fumble into another touchdown just :37 later. With the two-point conversion, Centerville now led 28-6.

The Miners tacked on two more scores to take a 42-6 lead into halftime.

Centerville added another score in the third quarter to push the lead to 50-6.

With the game decided it would be easy to watch the seconds tick off a running clock but these Chinook Sugarbeeters had some fight left in them.

Hannum took a snap from center scrambled away from the blitzing defenders and found junior James Christensen for a 57 yard scoring strike. Hannum added the conversion run to complete the scoring in a 50-14 loss.

The Sugarbeeters finished fourth in the B Subdivision of Northern Eight-Man Football and will miss the post season but they are not done playing football just yet.

They 'Beeters are tentatively scheduled to play the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks in Chester Friday night, however the game may be played on Saturday. Check with the school office for official game time.

The 'Beeters have already defeated the Hawks this season picking up a hard fought 18-16 win in the home opener back in September.

There is also a outside chance the team may be able to pick up a ninth game but that is still undetermined.
