January 24, 2018

Chinook junior Cord Schneider scored in the first half of Chinooks 72-44 win over Hays/Lodge Pole Thursday. Schneider finished with 21 points in the win as Chinook improved to 9-0 in District 9C play and 11-1 overall.

The first half of the conference schedules have been completed and that means teams are facing each other for the second time down the stretch.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters have a firm grip on the top seed at the District 9C tournament next month following a 72-44 win over the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds.

The Sugarbeeters were dominant again on Saturday as they raced passed the Big Sandy Pioneers 71-27 to improve to a perfect 9-0 in District 9C play and 11-1 overall.

The Thunderbirds were home Saturday as they welcomed the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks to town. In a game that was almost identical to the first meeting it was the Thunderbirds picking up a 78-57 win to improve to 7-2 in District 9C and 8-4 overall.

The Harlem Wildcats fell over the weekend to the Malta Mustangs 54-42 and the Wolf Point Wolves 64-51 to split the season series with both teams. The Wildcats fall to 3-2 in District 2B play and 3-9 overall.

The Turner Tornadoes played valiantly in both their contest but came up short against the North Star Knights, 55-49 and the Fort Benton Longhorns 62-46. Turner falls to 2-7 in the District 9C and 3-9 overall.

Thursday in a battle between the districts top two teams it was the Sugarbeeters who started fast.

Junior Isaac Bell scored the first two points of the gam and junior Riley Kellam and junior Brendan Edwards each followed as Chinook held a 6-2 lead less than two minutes into the contest.

Thunderbird senior Chance Main answered with a basket inside and then knocked down a triple to give the Thunderbirds a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter.

Junior James Christensen took a charge to establish the 'Beeter presence on defense. Moments later junior Trajan Hannum found junior Cord Schneider for an easy bucket and the game was even at 8-8.

Thunderbird senior Michael Ball connected from beyond the arc and the Thunderbirds held a 11-8 advantage. Kellam finished the quarter for the Sugarbeeters taking a pass from Bell to bring Chinook within one, 11-10 heading into the second quarter.

Senior David Mains basket put the Thunderbirds up 13-12 early in the stanza.

The Sugarbeeter offense was just beginning to stir when Schneider and Kellam each scored in the paint and then hit high gear as the Sugarbeeter rattled off a 16-0 run over the next five minutes.

Bell score on a nice drive to the basket and freshman Ethan Bell drained a pair from the charity stripe. Isaac Bell connected from downtown and then found Schneider on the 'Beeters next possession for a layup.

Edwards converted an offensive rebound for points and concluded the run with two successful free throws to give Chinook a 32-14 lead late in the second quarter.

Chinook began the third quarter with Schneider finding Kellam underneath for two before connecting on a couple of baskets himself for a 36-17 Sugarbeeter lead.

Chinook opened up a 51-32 lead entering the fourth quarter and cruised to a 72-44 win over the Thunderbirds.

Isaac Bell led the Sugarbeeter effort with 22 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Schneider scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Kellam added 11 markers for the Sugarbeeters.

The Thunderbirds were led on the night by Chance Main with 11 points, senior Jeff Stiffarm scored 10 and David Main added nine for the Thunderbirds.

Saturday the Big Sandy Pioneers were knotted up at 4-4 before the Sugarbeeters opened up a 26-4 lead after eight minutes of act.

Schneider began the run with free throw and finished it with an offensive rebound for two points. In between Isaac Bell scored nine and Kellam added four.

The Sugarbeeter defense led by Christensen was stifling, limiting the Pioneers top offensive threat (23ppg) to just two touches in the first half.

Chinook extended their lead to 46-14 at the intermission and led 56-14 after three before securing the 71-27 win.

Isaac Bell led the attack for the 'Beeters with 17 points and six rebounds and six assists. Schneider added 15 points while

Kellam chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Thunderbirds opened up a 13-4 lead early Saturday against the Hawks and senior Chance Main scored eight second quarter points to help the Thunderbirds open up a 27-20 halftime lead.

Hays/Lodge Pole found their mark from long range in the third quarter as junior Jeff Stiffarm knocked down two from beyond the arc and senior Damien Bradley and junior Tony Sears each connected as well propelling the Thunderbirds to a 52-37 lead entering the fourth.

Chance Main drained two from long range and scored fourteen fourth quarter points in guiding the Thunderbirds to a 78-57 win.

Chance finished with 26 points in the contest and Stiffarm scored 13. David Main added nine in the win.

After picking up wins the first time around at home the Wildcats weren't able to turn the trick on the road in dropping a pair of District 2B contests.

Sophomore Brad Cichosz led the Wildcats with 16 points in /Harlem's 54-42 loss to Malta Friday evening. Saturday senior Ryle Foote led the Wildcat attack with 16 points in Harlem's 64-51 loss to Wolf Point.

Turner fell to the North Star Knights Friday night in a hard fought District 9C clash. The Tornadoes were unable to overcome an early 10 point deficit, falling 55-49. Junior Cody Welsh led the Tornadoes with 26 points.

Saturday Turner led 12-11 early but the Longhorns used a strong second quarter effort to defeat the Tornadoes 68-54. Welsch again led the way with 26 points.
