Harlem continues to roll through the Northern B, beats Cut Bank 68-60, Rocky Boy 69-55

January 31, 2018

Harlem junior Skylee Dirden was clutch from long range over the weekend helping Harlem to a pair of wins.

The Harlem Lady Cats continued to roll through Northern B challengers as they dispatched the Cut Bank Wolves 68-60 and the Rocky Boy Morning Stars of the District 1B this past weekend.

The Lady Cats are a perfect 6-0 against the District 2B and 5-0 against the District 1B and are closing in on securing the top seed at the District tournament next month.

The Turner Tornadoes completed the season sweep of Dodson with a 58-35 drubbing of the Coyotes on Friday. Saturday Turner fell to the Chester/Joplin Inverness Hawks 36-29. Turner falls to 5-5 in District 9C play and 8-6 overall.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters fell at home Saturday to the Chester/J-I Hawks 47-40 and Saturday to the top seed Box Elder Bears 88-35.

Hays/Lodge Pole began the week with a loss at home to the Big Sandy Pioneers 50-39 on Tuesday. Saturday the Thunderbirds were bested by the North Star Knights 44-31.

Harlem faced their toughest test of the season Friday when a slow start led to a 16 point second quarter deficit against the Cut Bank Wolves.

Harlem and Cut Bank were tied 13-13 at the start of the second quarter but the Wolves exploded offensively and opened up a 35-19 lead. Junior Skylee Dirden connected twice from long range as did sophomore L'Tia Lawrence to help the Lady Cats weather the storm and trim the Cut Bank Lead to 35-28 by halftime.

Dirden connected again from downtown in the third quarter and junior Autumn Eagleman knocked down a triple of her own as Harlem fought to stay close to the Wolves.

Cut Bank led 54-46 entering the fourth quarter but the Lady Cats saved the best for last and kicked the offense into high gear down the stretch.

Dirden buried another triple and scored nine points in the fourth to help Harlem battle back. Lawrence scored seven in the quarter including five from the charity strip as the Lady Cats exploded for 22 points down the stretch and secured a impressive 68-60 come from behind win over the visiting Wolves.

Dirden finished with a game high 26 points in the contest including four from beyond the arc. Lawrence torched the nets for 20 points of her own in helping Harlem stay unbeaten against class B foes.

Saturday the girls traveled to Rocky Boy to face a team that took them to overtime earlier in the season.

Harlem raced out to a 16-7 lead after eight minutes of action and held a 27-20 advantage at the intermission.

The teams traded baskets in high scoring third quarter as both teams put 20 up on the scoreboard giving the Lady Cats a 47-40 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Harlem was able to expand on the lead and made sure they would not need extra time to defeat the Morning Stars. Harlem outscored Rocky Boy 22-15 over the final eight minutes to secure a 69-55 win. Lawrence and Eagleman each chipped in 16 points in the win. Head Coach Laramie Schwenke was pleased with her teams effort over the weekend, "The kids showed a ton of heart again this weekend, especially against Cut Bank, being down 16 at one point and battling back." Schwenke sees her teams effort starting to pay off, "Our percentage from the three was solid over the weekend for both games. It was a great team effort both nights, we had double digit assists as a team both games. And we plan to continue working on ourselves and getting better with fine tuning the little things."

The Turner Tornadoes trailed the Dodson Coyotes 7-6 entering the second quarter but strung together several baskets in the second outscoring the Coyotes 23-9 to take control of the contest. 29-16 by halftime. Turner extended the lead by eight in the third quarter and cruised to a 38-35 non-conference win.

Sophomore Sarah Billmayer led a balanced attack with 14 points. Freshman Shyan Krass scored 14 as well for the Tornadoes in the win.

Saturday the Tornadoes were unable to complete the season sweep of the Chester/J-I Hawks, falling 36-29 in a defensive battle. Billmayer again led Turner with nine points in the contest.

Chinook carried a 22-20 lead into halftime Friday night against the Chester/J-I Hawks and led 34-33 entering the fourth quarter.

The Hawks converted their 10-13 attempts from the charity stripe to defeat the Sugarbeeters 47-40.

Senior Hailey McMaster led the effort for the Chinook offense with 10 points and was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.

Saturday the Box Elder Bears were too much for the Sugarbeeters as they fell to the conference leaders 88-35. Senior Carrie Hofer connected twice from down and scored 11 points to lead the team.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds let a 20-13 halftime lead slip away in falling to the Big Sandy Pioneers 50-39 last Tuesday. Sophomore Mulleeah Stiffarm led the Thunderbirds with 13 points.

Saturday Hays/Lodge Pole was home to the visiting North Star Knights. The Thunderbirds stayed close through much of the contest but in the end it was North Star picking up a 44-31 win.

Stiffarm again led the Thunderbird attack scoring 16 points on the night.
