A Year of Service for a Lifetime of Change

April 18, 2018

Chinook has been host to two Young Adult Volunteers (commonly known as YAVs), Lauren LaMonica and Lacy Schimmel since the end of August last year.

This program is an ecumenical, faith-based year of service for young people, ages 19-30, in 22 sites around the world and in the United States. YAVs accompany local agencies working to address root causes of poverty and reconciliation while exploring the meaning and motivation of their faith with peers and mentors. YAVs serve during the academic year, August to July.

Program benefits during the YAV year include a regular stipend, housing, transportation assistance and student-loan repayment options throughout the duration of the service year.

In Chinook, Lauren and Lacy assist in many areas including Meadowlark School, Funshine Preschool, Chinook High School, Sweet Nursing Home, Grande Villa, LEAP, SonShine Youth Group, Food Pantry, Senior Center, Loaves and Fishes and the Blaine County Library. These volunteers cover a lot of ground!

On Sunday, April 22nd, the YAV Board of Directors will be hosting a celebration of all the sites that Lauren and Lacy have been involved with. They will be giving a short presentation of their year so far. This is also a time when fundraising for the program occurs. Funds are used to help with the costs of the program. Please join us to share fellowship and generosity for this valuable program. It will be the Chinook Senior Center at 2:00 in the afternoon. Refreshments will be served.
