Sargent Brett Friede to Retire from Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Department

June 20, 2018

Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brett Friede will retire Thursday after more than three decades as a law enforcement officer.

Friede has served in Lewis and Clark County for the past 28 years as part of a 32-year law enforcement career that includes time in Toole County.

Friede has spent time as a patrol deputy, crime scene photographer and hostage negotiator, and was well-known as the courthouse deputy. He said leaving the sheriff’s office is “bittersweet,” but he is looking forward to taking some time off to get healthy.

“This was what I wanted to do my whole life,” Friede said. “But all those fights catch up with you.”

Friede said his favorite times came during his 20 years patrolling the county, but he was fondly remembered by courthouse clerks who said they felt safer than ever when he was on duty.

Sheriff Leo Dutton said Friede had a “distinguished career” and a talent for anticipating the “right place to be,” especially while finding people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Friede said he would be taking the summer to spend time with his family and go on a vacation or two.
